View Full Version : Help me pick a new S-ata Hard Drive! :)
Hey Guys!
I wanted to upgrade to S-ATA although I don't have a S-ATA controller on my mobo. I'll just buy this nice cheap controller:
"ST Lab Serial ATA w/RAID 2-Channel PCI Controller"
looks nice and cheap (around 35$).
Now I need a HD who fit in this list:
1. Quiet! as quiet as possible!
2. Size: 80gb, 120gb. no need for more.
3. Buffer: 8mb
4. 7200rpm ofcourse.
That's it I guess.
thx..
I just got a WD 120Gb 8Mb SATA HD last week and am really happy with it. It is alot quieter than my Maxtor HDs (ata133).
U cant go wrong with WD or Matrox.
my wd 80gb SE (ata100) is kinda noisy.
Is yours ultra quiet? I mean like unaudioable?
go to storagereview for reviews of hard disks.
I think the best of the moment might be Maxtor Diamondmax Plus 9, fast and quiet.
IBM just launched a new line of hard drives, larva wrote a mini review of the 80GB, 8mb cache, SATA version here:

the older WDxxxxJBs are pretty noisy, but the newer ones are a lot quieter. I noticed that when I bought my 3rd WD1200JB this year.
I'd still recommend the maxtor though.

I have 4 case fans, 2xMatrox HDs, big CPU fan... so to be honest i cant tell how quiet it really is. ;)
It is quieter than the HDs i do have at the moment... When i am running games off the Matrox HDs, i can hear them working, but not with the WD one.
:)
How about that seagate 80gb 8mb buffer s-ata?
the 7200.7 series look alright, but the Diamondmax Plus 9 is still better.

I have the maxtor 120gig Sata. The noise isn't bad. No problems yet.

WD's vary a lot. I had a 800JB that was noisy as could be. My 600JB was faulty out of the box, its replacement is nearly silent. I've had 3 or 4 1200JBs that were all quiet. Luck of the draw, quality control is not all that good with WD these days (and these are not FDB drives, and bearing noise is a problem).
The Hitach 7k250 is silent, and faster to boot (no pun intended).
Thanks Larva,
I'll look into that drive.
