View Full Version : cooling my 1.2
i have an athlon 1.2 266fsb, and its running at about 57C idle. I am sure this is way too hot, and its probably because i have the retail POS fan on it. I never shopped for a fan before, and I was wondering about what to buy. I was maybe going to OC, seeing as how i have a newer asus a7a266 with dip switches for multiplier settings, but I need to get the temp down before i try that.
check out overclockerz.com, no relation to this site, and look at the OCZ Copper Gladiator. Its pretty good. There is also the swiftech 462 which has done real well in most tests.

My Vantec heatsink with the 38cfm Delta fan is a great performer if you don't mind some noise. $20 plus shipping from www.pccool.com
ya I just looked at a roundup on athlonoc.com and they picked the OCZ copper gladiator...if anyone has any better suggestions let me know. thanks for the ideas.

I recommend a wbk38 Global Win...u can get them for around 20 dollars new...on ebay...loud but efficient
The Thermoengine and a delta fan usually tops most roundups, and the only fans I can think of that top it are the expensive swiftechs's and the glaciator. Plus the Thermoengine has a great tim so if you are installing it and leaving it on then theres no need to replace it.
Go to the front page of overclockers. ON June 15 there is a thing that list what is too hot. look at the list of fans there. I have a Volcano 2 and it is ok, stays at 53C fully loaded. it is not loud at all. I also have alot of case coolinbg though. try some more intake fans for ur case.

plague, if you are going to overclock a 1.2Ghz processor, you'll likely have a far better experience, with less fretting over temperatures by purchasing and installing a top tier cooler.
ThermalRight SK-6, Millenium Thermal's glaciator or one of the Swiftech's. It's falsely economical to try and save 10-20USD on a HSF for a really hot processor.
Now that coolers with a C/W of less than 0.2 are available, you should consider this as an option. Remember, as Palomino climbs in clockspeed, the thermal loads that you'll likely be dealing with are little changed from those that we are dealing with today.
Think of it as the inexpensive future proofing.
Don't forget about excellent case-cooling, as the best HSF will be rendered useless by a case that is unable to evacuate the heat.

alright, I think I'm gonna go with the millenium glaciator, now the question is, where can I buy one? Their webpage is sayin its gonna take a couple weeks, and i was thinkin that somebody else has to sell them, so anyone know of any place? it'd be great if compusa sold all this stuff so i wouldnt have to go through the hassle of the web. cuz i dont have my own credit card.....whatever, let me know, and thanks again for all the input.
The Glaciator is a unique product manufactured and distributed by Millenium only, AFAIK. If you want something quick, consider the SK-6, Gladiator, or CAK-38. I'm as compulsive as the next OC'er, but the wait for the Glaciator may be worth it.
Hoot
heh, thats what i figured. i think i will go for the glaciator... i can wait a little bit longer

You can get a better hsf and also put some arctic silver, this is always good. BUT if you have the asus a7a266 mobo, with bios 1004, remember that it swows 9-10c MORE than the real temp. In that case, 57c is 47c. I put the 1003b version and my 51 went to 41c
well in that case what is a more accurate way to measure the temp. will another program just report what the BIOS tells it?? also, asus update doesnt look like it wants me to flash the bios with an older image, should i do it the old fashioned way, or not try it, or just take your word that it reads the temp wrong??
