I saw a 1 ghz t-bird 266 fsb for 104 bucks which is pretty tempting. But i have few questions. First of all anyone bought one of these from newegg.com? Was it an AXIA chip and were the bridges unlocked? I have the old Kt7 which does not run on a 133 mhz fsb. So i can just unlock the L1's if they arent already and change the fsb and multiplier right? This would be better than buying the 100 mhz fsb chip because this way im more likly to get AXIA correct? Thanks

... except it was from thompsons. I ordered a 266 for the same reason, figuring it would be an AXIA for sure. It was. The L1's were cut. I'm using a KT7raid, also a non 'A' board. Highest I have achieved is 1392MHz.

my friend has a 1gig AVIA 200mhz chip, and got it to 1.4 with a pretty crappy hsf. So i wouldn't worry too much between an AXIA or an AVIA.

If the L1s are cut (I suspect they will be) just use some conductive paint to unlock them - I expect you've unlocked chips before as it sounds like you're upgrading from an older socket A chip, but if you haven't it's not too hard as long as you're careful about it. Like William said, don't worry too much about it being an AXIA - whatever you get I'm sure it'll still oc well. And another point in the 266's favour - getting it will give you a slightly better upgrade option if you want to get a KT133a board later, as there's a chance a 100MHz fsb chip might not do 133.

yea i've unlocked a chip before. It's just a lot easier if it is already done. I had read an article at athlonoc.com and it had the average overclocks of a whole lot of steppings. The AXIA and AVIA 1 Ghz were both around 1400-1450, but anything else was pretty bad, like 1200-1300. So AVIA and AXIA are what i want, but it sounds like the 1.0 Ghz 266 fsb's are almost always one of those two.

I bought my 1gig TBird from newegg.com and it was an AXIA without the Y stepping though. After much work, I finally got it stable at 10.5x140 for a grand total of 1471mhz. How's that for an overclocking percentage?

I love my AVIA, they don't get the reconigtion they deserve, although alot is said about the AXIA, I am happy.
