Another review of the Deskstar 7K250 @ storagereview.com This review should back up larva's review nicely.:D Here. (http://www.storagereview.com/articles/200310/20031007HDS722525VLSA80_1.html)
Heh, my report was not designed to replace a full test like the one at storagereview.com. I used their test data to select the drive in the first place (they publish their performance results long before they get the full article published). Especially intstructive is the seek performance measurements there, and how they compare to the competition.
What my review was designed to do is point out one thing--the Deskstar 7k250 is a really nice drive. All benchmarks aside, you can take a machine that already has a fast drive like the WD 8MB butter ones, put in a 7k250, and notice the difference easily. Not easily quantified is the apparant speed to the user, and the Deskstar is so speedy that this is an inevitable comparitive advantage of this design. The low cost and noise factors make this drive really easy to recommend, at least until the 72GB Raptor appears.

You do know that this happens with every brand? Yes the IBM's were bad, but I havent seen any sources showing that the Maxtors have below average reliability. Also these "IBM" drives arent IBM, they are Hitachi, if i'm not mistaken.
Makers go through cycles. I can point to periods of time in which you could not use Maxtors, could not use WDs, could not use IBMs, and could not use Samsung or Fujitsu. And Seagate...
Right now IBMs are of good quality. The late model WDs are very poor quality-control wise. I've had many that were noisy, doa, or failed in short order. IBMs tend to do fine is you get one that has been handled carefully. And they do have an exellent 3 year warranty. In the end proper backup is the only real insurance, and it equally applicable to drives of all makes.
I would have to agree with Larva. All manufactures have had their problems. Right now I have 4 WD HD. All have been reliable and quiet. Prior to that I bought mostly IBM and loved them all. The only two HD that ever failed on me was a Seagate. It crashed a head after 2 years and they replaced it. The other was a Maxtor that was DOA back when they sucked. That was many years ago. From what I've read and from what Larva has to say this is an excellent drive and probably the best 7,200 rpm drive out there. If I were looking to buy one at the moment its the one I'd get.
