View Full Version : FSP400 or 460?
After looking closely at the specs of the Fortron/Sparkle 400 and 460 pfn's I'm wondering which one would be right for me. The 400 has more 5v and the 460 has more 12 volt power.
FSP400-60PFN
3.3v - 28a
5v - 40a
12v - 15a
FSP460-60PFN
3.3v - 27a
5v - 29a
12v CPU - 16.5a
12v I/O - 15a
I'm still unclear on what gets power from where.
My xp2400 (eventually up to 2.3 volts) and radeon 9500 are going to be pushed to the limit on my nf7 and I'm wondering if I'd benefit more from the higher 5v or the 12v, or if I should be looking for an even more powerful psu?
Any advice appreciated.

it's my understanding that AMD cpu's are powered either by the 5v or the 12v lines depending on the motherboard....you should do a search on the nf7 and see...
i think the nf7 is off the 12v, but i'm not sure...
in either case, the 460 or the 400 would probably be sufficient even for overclocking...
but if i were to spend that much on a psu then i would get a fortron 530 for $75...more total power and superb 3.3+5v power as well as more than adequate 12v power...
you could also get one of the antec tp series (430, 480 or 550) for a little more if you want more features like temperature controlled fan connector molexes...
Thanks dustybyrd,
Just ordered the FSP460-60PFN.
Hopefully it'll get me where I wanna be :) .
Looks like I may have to do some fancy wire work though. It comes with a EPS12V 24+8 ATX connection... I got an adapter for the 24 to 20 pin, not sure what that +8 is though.
Thanks again

did you get that newegg refurbished one?
great deal if so....
i understand that come with 24 to 20 pin adaptors...
not sure about the 8 to 4 pin adaptor though...but you should be able to rig something up with that...i believe the 8 pin connector just has more 12v lines than the 4 pin connector...
is a Fortron 350w Aurora enough for an 1800+@ 9.5x245? With a 9500 softmod, 2x512 3700 ram and a 200gb hd?
I can still go back and cancel my 350w order for the 460 if the 350 won't pan out. I got the 350 because it's supposed to be quiet and larva swears by it.

you should PM larva...
but my own feeling is that it might be enough, it might not....depends on the amount of voltage you will be running the CPU...
that's 2.3+Ghz...should be ok...if less than 1.9v i would say...but can't guarentee it until you try it...
I would probably up the cpu voltage to 1.85 and up the board voltage to 1.7v. I'm limited by heat and air cooling.
Yes Dusty, it was the refurb from newegg. I was worried it may not come with the adapter (being a refurb) so I also ordered this too just in case...

Brings the shipped total to 58 bucks. Still over 20 bucks off the new one.
I started looking into the True480 but found a couple reviews where they exploded and fried the mb and cpu along with it. I'm sure its an excellent PSU but I just didn't want to take that chance.
Thanks for your assistance...
edit... The exploding True480's were the ones with the blue LED fans...

I think you need the drive molex to 4 pin aux connector also. With the addition of that the 460 nearly costs as much as a new 530 with warranty. I almost bought the 460 until I added up the total.

The 350 should do fine for your rig, but understand that's bout the outer limits for it. If you expect to progress higher in clock speed you may need a more powerful supply to get there.
Ok well I always might, so what would be my best bet?

i think i have an extra one of these molex to 4 pin cpu power connectors...
PM me if you want it, heavy1
Thanks Dusty, but I have the 4pin on my burnt up channel well that i can take off and pair up with a molex. I would splice it right in but that may void the warranty.
I appreciate the offer though :)
I just had a thought...
The fsp460 has 2 12v rails (or so it appears)
+12V CPU 16.5A
+12V I/O 15A
Does this mean that if I use a molex to hook up the 4 pin, I will be using the 12vI/O? If this is the case, I have to use the 12v lines that go to the 8pin and not a molex, right?

that could be true...it depends on whether or not there are completely separate capacitors for the two separate 12v ratings...
my guess, based on the fact that other fortron power supplies don't have separate ratings, is that you would have to use the 8 pin connector for 12v power to the cpus...
should be able to splice it thought (or just remove half the pins from the 8 pin connector---amke sure you remove the right ones though)
