I've kept an eye on ati card prices since last may and five months later prices have dropped at most around $10. I don't after accidently frying my 9500np and after seeing this I think I'll just stick with my Geforce 1 card rather then spend exorbitant amounts for a decent video card.

I saw similar things with Geforce prices. After the FX series was released, i thought the Ti series prices would drop. They haven't come down a whole lot, the new ones are just more expensive, lol

I wouldn't count on ATI prices dropping too much, even after the XT's are widely available. I think the HL2 results are the cause of this. You should be able to pick up NV cards a dime/dozen though. hehe

ATI card price has been going up. 9800 Non Pros use to be like $234 or sometime, now they are more like $260. They are getting rare thats why.

Since the 9800 np is going away, I bet the price of the 9800 pro will come down when the 9800xt's are available generally in the market. Unfortunately, that's probably not going to be until January. :(

Heh, I won't have any money to spend on computer parts anyway until after Feb, so that's ok by me. :D

Just because a new product comes out, that in no way means there will be proce drops. The "old" product still retails for lower then the new product, so why drop its price? (thats the simple way of looking at it)

If you are looking for a deal, keep a close eye on newegg's refurb section. I just got an AIW 9800 Pro last week for $288. Card works great but it didn't come with any extras, no cables, remote or even driver cd. Luckily I already had all the cables and remote from my AIW 8500. Some guys get lucky and get everything included in the retail pack. Just be aware that you might get card only.

at this rate with video card price increases and older models not really dropping we are going to be spending like $800 on a video card by the end of 2005.. Maybe even sooner... That would be at least 4 new models and I'm sure by then the 9800XT will be like $320 maybe if your lucky....

I remember when video cards where just for video and like only $10.... I wish those days could come back... Hell my $15 Trident 2MB video card played Quake pretty well... but that was also 8 years ago.... Man those where the days... The Monster Card was all the rage...

I don't think we'll see any mainstream video cards for $800 in the next few years. What WILL people charge for high end video cards? Whatever the market will bare. $400? yes. $500 mebbie. $600+? Don't think this is gonna sell through most major channels outside of niche cards (9800 pro Zalman solutions for example).

As an aside, I gotta tell you, if you paid $500 for the hoover 5800 ultra, you've GOTTA be kicking yourself now. Bet those cards came nowhere near close to living up to their marketing costs...
