View Full Version : Win XP Driver detection issue:

I've got WinXP home on my machine:
(2M) - Toshiba SD M1202 DVD ROM
(2S) - Sony CRX 160e CD RW
My problem is with the Sony. It works fine - Reads / Writes, etc. Problem is, everytime I boot XP, it finds it as a new device, offers to search for a new driver for it, "Could not find device driver for . ", and lets me know that the device may not function properly.
Even though it functions perfectly fine with Nero6.
So, how can I make it stop hunting for the drivers?
Solutions attempted:
Uninstall driver, allow to redetect and search -- Same result.
Search for updated drivers online -- Nothing new.
Any thoughts are appreciated.
Thanks

in the end of finding a driver for this device, MS gives you 1 option and it's called "disable *******", when you check this option, winxp won't pop up and ask you for driver any more
interestingly enough, winxp should have a driver for this device . Not sure why it happens that way

Thanks for your advice, Powerme -
I tried it as you said; Selecting the do not attempt to find drivers for this device again At the end of it. Rebooted and guess what?
Same thing.
Popup "Could not load installer for . "
And detects the new device and tries to install it again...
So, still in the same boat.

Existing. I bought it as an addon for a Dell PII in 2001.
Transplanted it to this box last week.
So it's definitely not new..

winxp normally will install the driver for any cd drom/dvd/cd burner without a problem
your sony is quite new too. there are 3 things you can try
1-install SP1 for winxp ??? If yes, still have problem ???
2-go to "device manager" and UNINSTALL this sony and restart the computer to see if winxp finds the driver.
if this doesn't work, go to STEP 3
3- Before doing this step, backup your computer by using drive image or ghost 03.
a-repair installation
b-format and install winxp again.
that way , winxp will find a driver for your SONY burner

You could also give this a try...Start | Run | Type regedit and click OK | Locate the UpperFilters value under the following Key in the Registry...
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE | SYSTEM | CurrentControlSet | Control | Class | {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK. Locate the LowerFilters value under the same Key in the Registry...
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE | SYSTEM | CurrentControlSet | Control | Class | {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK. If you lose functionality in a particular program, such as CD recording software, you may need to reinstall that software. Also, make sure to at least export the above Key...just in case there's a problem and you need to merge the previous settings. :)
