View Full Version : gromacs
alright. i just installed the windows 3.25 beta client and am running it in wine in redhat 9. This way, i'm able to use the sse boost. I've heard that the faster you do work units, the more points you get. but i found this on the folding website:
If it's faster, will the participants get more points? Sorry, the points in the stats will still be benchmarked by the CPU time, so your stats won't be affected either.

what's up? are the wu's basically assigned a point value, and it doesn't matter how fast you do them, you just recieve the point value assigned. however, the benefit would be that you could rack up 2 or more work units in the same amount of time. Am i seeing this correctly?
thought redhat 9 didn't support wine...
(i know nothing of linux, just repeating what i think i've read here)
you are correct about the points. doesn't matter how fast you get them done. each wu is worth the same amount whether you do it in 2 minutes or 2 years. (2 years actually wouldn't give you any points cause it'd be way past the due date)
gromacs are faster cause we can use SSE on them which makes folding them alot faster. i can generally do 1 wu/day on my 3.6ghz intel rig with no SSE but can complete 1.75-2 per day using SSE if i get 2 gromacs in a row.
edit: found it

Wine is not officially supported in Redhat 9. You won't be able to find an rpm for it. It can be installed, and there's a thread about it in the linux section of the folding community forums.
so i was sorta right but i guess there's always a work around.

only two a day? are you sure? the rig in my sig does like 3 a day and i'm sure it's slower than yours

3 a day? I usually have 13 -14 hour WU times, sometimes there is a 12 hour or so WU doing the 50+ pointers. Maybe some of the 30 pointers are 3 a day.

right. the 30 pointers are usually around 7-8 hours for me which is about 3 per day. i don't get them very often. i am always on the 53's and 60's.
