Hello
My system crashed down 5 days ago due to the lovesan.a virus. I had to format the C:/ and then reinstall winXP Pro.
I have been using dial suck for 5 years on this machine ( asus, P4, 2.57Ghz. 512RAM... ) and i decided to upgrade to verizon DSL.
My brother has dsl and he has connected 2 computers though his netgear router. I am using an intel adaptor and i have connected my computer on his router. The router blinks a yellow light which means my pc is connected. My computer shows that i am online BUT i can not open any websites or do anything, its like i have no intertnet access at all here. taskbar says local area connection 1 connected but it says send xx packets and received 0. Why 0??
am i doing something wrong? any website i try to open says dns error but the software for my adapter shows the IP....
any ideas?

not even a tip or something?
Is you network card set to use a static IP address? It could be that the router is set to use DHCP in witch case it will assign you an IP address rather than you specifying one.
Try this: Right Click My Network Places>Properties In there should be listed your lan connection that you are connected to the router by, its probably called "local area connection" Right click on it and click properties. In the box that pops up scroll down to TCP/IP and click it once then click the properties button. In the box that pops up make sure that the "obtain an ip address automatically is checked" and also that the "obtain a dns server address automatically" is checked.
Then click ok and close, open internet explorer and see if it works if not click start>run> and type "cmd" int he prompt type ipconfig /renew and then give it another try.
If it still doesnt work then it could be that DHCP is switched off in the router and so you will need to assign an ip address manually or switch DHCP on.
If you already had a ip address manually assigned and the above didnt work it could be the ip address you specified is on a different ip address range to the router, you could manually set them both say set the router to 192.168.0.1 (it should already be someting like that) and then set the ip of your computer to something like 192.168.0.2
Hope that helps if not give us a little more info and we will se what we can do :)

If ipconfig /renew times out then it means it hasent been able to get a ip address witch means one of a few things.
a) The router may not have DHCP enabled or even support DHCP (I would of thought so though) What you need to do is log into the router and enable it. You need to know the ip address of the router im guessing it will be 192.168.0.1 as this is the most common default ip address for a router. Open internet explorer and in the address bar type http://192.168.0.1 it should bring you to a log in screen for your router type in you username and password and login. If the password hasent been changed the username and password may be admin/admin. Once you have logged in you should have a web page based configuration screen, you want to look for the option that says something like enable DHCP. Once you have enabled it save the changes and exit and then give it a try and see if you can browse.
b) The other thing is it could be a connectiity issue open a command prompt again and type ping 192.168.0.1 if you get a reply then you have connectivity to the router, if it times out then there could be a problem with either the network card or the network cable.
If none of the above work then chances are 192.168.0.1 is not the ip of the router and you will need to find out what ip address the router is set to.
Also if none of the above work can you give us a little more info like what model the router is and what type of cable are you using (cross over or straight through)
Oh yeah did you try assigning a static ip address to your computer that could solve the problem in one go try these settings:
IP address: 192.168.0.1
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1

other address of the router could be 192.168.1.1, 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.100
and generally if lights are blinking that means its not working, generally you want solid lights (except for the activity light). did your ISP give you any software to run? or specific things to configure on your comp?

Make sure if there is an uplink button on the router that it is not activated, and that your computer is not plugged into that particular port if possible.
I wold try a new cat5 cable and just make sure its all on tight and try a different port on the router, because the other PC's are obviously not having trouble connecting through this router.

the router is a netgear one with 4 ports to connect 4 computers
im using a cat5 cable . the verizon dsl's software says to have everything on auto set you do not manualy enter any Ip add or dns servers. the other computers was connected fine when i connected the cable but this 1 is giving me problems for 1 week now.

You don't need any DSL software unless you are connected directly to the modem because your router handles the pppoe authentication. Also, windows XP has pppoe software built-in so you don't need the dsl software installed in windows, even if you were connected directly to the modem.
How about you delete you network connection and make a new one in the wizard?
PS. I work for a verizon DSL helpdesk.... In fact, I am at work right now.

if you're receicving an IP address which beings with 169.x.x.x that is a windows private IP address...an IP address which windows assigns to itself when it is unable to establish one elsewhere which more than likely means there is some cabling issue or something wrong with the way the router is configured..
first off, make sure you have the cable plugged in TIGHT between both the router and the pc, make sure you are using a regular patch cable and not a crossover cable...
also you may want to 'reset' the router to it's default settings to ensure it is providing DHCP service and that it's not frozen...usually there is a little push-button in the back for this purpose, after holding it in for about 15 seconds, you'll also want to unplug the power cable for about a minute or so..
after doing those things, why don't you tell us what you get for an IP address then?

hello,
i did everything you all told me to do . the router has no dhcp buttons and it came with no CD.
nothing works. My pc shows that it is connected but it really is not as it can not receive any bytes and serf the web. There are 2 led lights on the router indicating connected computers and for my computer one stays on ( yellow light) and the other keeps blinking.
i even formated my C:/ hoping to fix the problem but it did not
i will either have to buy and try a new adaptor or just stay with dial suck
btw my adaptor is Intel (R) Proset for wired connections using the latest version from intel.com

um,. why would you format your hard drive? like i said, if you're getting an IP addy beginning with 169. it's a connectivity issue..i'f i were you, i'd start looking more at the router itself, every router has a reset button to restore it to factory default settings..

Can you connect to the router's configuration menu, maybe from anothe rPC connected to the router? Should be able to do it by putting:
either 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 in an internet explorer address bar.
If you can't do that from your problem computer, its got to be a connection problem with your NIC or cat5 cable. Make sure the NIC is installed and try a different cable, and different router port.
If you can't get in to the router's config from any computer, you'll need to look up the manufacturer's site and flash the router's firmware. They usually have a tiny button on the bottom or back that will reset the oruter to its default settings.
If you can get in the router's config menu, check the DHCP client table and see which PC's are getting an IP address assigned by the router.
If you fresh installed windows, maybe you could examine your neetwork/dial-up properites and let us know how that's configured.
A good way to test out your NIC and cable is to:
connect this problem PC directly to the cable modem with a cat5 cable (do not go thorugh the router or collect $200)
For winXP:
go to network connections in control panel and make an ew connection, choose connect to the internet on the 1st screen, choose set up connection manually on the second screen, choose connect using a broadband connection that requires a username and password (pppoe), give the connection a name (doesn't matter what), enter username and password for your verizon account and make sure all 3 boxes are checked, click finish.
If that lets your PC connect, yuo'll know the problem is not with the PC's NIC or cat5 cable. And it is instead a router issue. you can delete the new network connection you made in the network conenctions section of the control panel. Hook back into the router anc connect the router back into the modem, make a new network connection same as before:
choose connect to the internet on the 1st screen, choose set up connection manually on the second screen, choose connect using a broadband connection that is ALWAYS on, give the connection a name (doesn't matter what), click finish.

Hello
DHCP was enable. I could not connect to the routers web config page . The other pc could and i did log in from there . I followed the instructiopns but nothing changed.
Finally i went to my local compusa store and got a new ethernet card for $5.00. I got a cheap one cause i wanted to test it first. and guess what , it connected fine.:) :)
thanks all for your help. I guess there was a problem with Intel's card i guess.
