The Curse: A stock case (Antec slk3700amb)
The Remedy: Modification

I have been a huge fan of the Legend of Zelda series, ever since I played Ocarina of time (yes I know that isnt very far back in the LOZ chronology, but this game hooked me with its deep story, wonderful layout and design, and for the time beautiful graphics.)

No one has made a Zelda themed case to my knowlege, and I feel that it deserves a tribute.

With that said, on with the work log!

first thing first, I cut out the back stock fangrill, the hexigonal shapes made it a bit of a hassle because they left holes where there shouldnt be, but i plan to fix that soon

I decided, before I go ahead with sanding the main case, I wanted to work on the psu. The color scheme for the outside is planned to be Green, with black accents, and other colors in accordance to design. First up, disassembly, but I ran into a snag. Other psu's i've worked with came apart with no problem, but this one had some little circuit board with an aparatus i'd guess was power surge protection, take a look in the pic below

So to work around that, i cut the wires connecting it to the psu and slipped a sandwich bag over/though the hole and taped it tightly at the end. From there it was ready to sand.

Painting the psu:

I got a nice deal on a 4 pack of camoflauge krylon from walmart for $2.00, included were black, tan, brown, and olive - even though i wont be using the other colors at the moment, black went into effect.

Here's a pic of the bottom

Just about 10 minutes ago I gave the bottom (with the 80mm fanhole) a nice black gloss coat.
When painting the main part of the psu for the first time, it tipped over when i brought it inside... so i had to sand again and re-spray, so i'll wait overnight to spray with the gloss.

Pics of both parts glossed will be posted soon :D

hehe, i have followed and beaten nearly every Zelda game known to man (except a lot of the gameboy ones and majoras mask) Anyway, wonderful idea, would love to see how it works out.

Maybe you could make a replicate of the master sword and have it stuck through the top of your case.

Time for an update!
unfortunatly yesterday it rained, so I had to wait untill today to finish up the painting.

I've read several places that the best way to apply a nice smooth paint job is in thin coats, and the way to thin the paint is by putting the can in hot water for a couple minutes. I had this large cup from a Central Michigan university football game, and it works perfectly :D

Heres the bottom of the psu (with the fan hole), the ring isnt a paint splotch, it's actually the overhead light's reflection

The top of the psu was giving me a lot of trouble, it might just be because i'm trying to go a little faster than I should, and applying the paint wrong, but i think i got it right this time (after about 3 times of having to sand haha)

Yesterday I got one of my orders from svc (includes small sleeving for fan tails, as well as other small wires, heatshrink, and some nifty black thumbscrews), and today from newegg the dvd rom

Paint = Krylon gloss, same kind as used on psu (yeah i know, vinyl dye would work better, but i figured might as well, i'll give them a clear coat once they dry over a couple days)

Holders = the type of pins that are used in sewing, like for holding the template of something to the material, i got them from my mom, and they work great for holding small details that need to be painted

the small dots that would go in the middle of the feet were just pushed into the cardboard

I finally got the power supply painted the way i wanted, its nice and shiny, with a pretty much even paint job, not much is noticably wrong with it - and its just the powersupply anyway.

haha, it took me about 3 hours (the movie + the other disc's behind the scenes and out takes haha) to sand the panel to the way I wanted it. Behind it, is the other side panel to give a compare/contrast. I used 40 grit Aluminum oxide sandpaper, and it did the trick nicely.

Got another package today, containing some cold cathodes (i wont specify the color, you'll have to find out soon), a vantec 120mm stealth, and some of those noise damping silicon dealies (i've never tried them before, but i figured hey - why not)

Kino >> I think the reason they look a bit "chromish" is because of a flash from his camera, or from the sunlight outside, which reflected off of the black and made it look differently. They are black though, you can sorta tell around the "top" edges in the picture and on the color of the box :D

I got another box in the mail today with more sleeving, 3/4 and 3/8 in :D
so I decided, time to work on the psu

I cut off the un-needed wires that wouldnt be used (like the p4 power, etc) and went to town on removing the molex connectors.

I decided they'd look better green, so i got a can of krylon fusion and painted away. At the moment, they're still a little wet, so i'm waiting over night before I put them back on.

Since I didnt want to bother taking off the main ATX power plug (although I did try, but gave up because I didn't want to pull out all of those wires if I did succeed haha) I just pulled the sleeving over the connector, and used 2 lock ties instead of heatshrink. Then instead of painting the plastic, I used a green sharpie :). I think heatshrink would have made it look a lot better, but theres no way i could get it on unless i removed the connector or cut the wires... ahh well, no biggie.


Thats all for this update, there should be tomarrow night though :D

ooo its a vfd! haha I got this vfd from Cold Dog a bit back and had been using it with my current case, but outside the box, this time around it will get a proper home. The cut wasnt completely perfect, so all I have to do now is give it a filing and it should look great

Sunday, I got a couple files and worked on the vfd cutout, it looks much cleaner now :D as well as 6 cans of paint in preperation (one is missing from the pic though haha). You cant really tell from the picture, but it's rustoleum's hunter green.

I ordered some leds from chi-wing of ebay. The color is the same as the cathodes ;) Muahah, i'll never tell, you'll have to keep an eye out to find out the secret color

Alrighty, time for another update :D

Thanks guys, and I agree about Majora - I beat the first boss, then just kind of gave up and havent touched it since. The time element really turned me off, because I like to take a leisurely pace and explore everything.

Here's the completed cd-rw. The paint looks a little off around the circular dealy that holds the magnet thingy in, but that's been fixed now thanks to Mr. Sharpie

Finally, I started work on the front panel, chopping off all those air restrictive and somewhat ugly fins. I used a regular cut off wheel, and then a grinding stone to smooth out the bumps. The bondo next to it wont be used for a while, because I plan to cutout a fanhole for the front fan, and then bondo up the problematic areas. I've never worked with bondo before, so anyone have any tips? haha

Primed up the other side panel, too bad its just the primer because the application was excellent haha

I sanded and primed/painted the dvd rom's case as well, but since it looks similar to the cd-rw, i wont bother with pics untill it's finished and put back together

Today I had to work, so I brought the chasis in, and gave it a good sanding.
Had a bit of an accident last night though, I wanted to burn a cd, and didnt want to turn my main rig off, to plug the cd-rw in... i really should have *Doh!*, I put the molex in the wrong way, it shorted the system out and rebooted, and i think may have damage the cd-rw, because when I shut down, and tried to boot up, it gave me a solid orange led, and the tray wouldnt open when i pushed the button...
ah well, it was a 32x burner anyway, time to upgrade :D

i didnt say i got it in, i attempted to, because i wasnt paying attention to direction - everyones tried to plug it in the wrong way at least once :p

Another update :)

Worked a bit today, and had fun with bondo

First I took a scrap of lexan i had lying around, and cut it to fit behind the area i planned to bondo up, in the picture above, you'll see that behind it, i taped it in with masking tape, just for extra security.

I plan to cut out the fanhole in the lexan later, or remove the lexan - but i'm swaying to just cutting the hole because the lexan gives it some support

I also worked a bit with the led's

As shown in the image above, i removed the orange led's and replaced them with the "Secret" color. I decided to leave the main green led alone, and not switch it with another led, because it fit well with the theme, and it saves time cutting and soldering haha
I also sleeved it up, unfortunately i'm running out of sleeving, so I had to use a size too small, but it looks ok none the less.

Small update

I started sanding down the bondo, went and got a sanding dealy for a drill to make light work of it. Didn't finish because of time constraints, but here's a comparison of what it's come from haha

I had it perfect, and then as soon as i've come to bring it into the garage, a damn bug landed right on it! I left it be, but then it started walking around on it :wallbash: , so i ended up pulling it off and murdering it between my fingers... arrgh
Started with 40 grit to remove all the paint before, moved up to 200, then 320, then 400, then today jumped up to 1500 mmmm

but yeeeaahhh

Today I sanded down the bondo quite a bit more, then applied some more to fill in a gap i missed. I cut out the lexan in the fan area, filed it down a bit, used the stone grinder dealy and cleaned up the edges, then applied a bit of bondo around there.

I also got a special package in the mail :D

I wanted a really unique fangrill, and the triforce it's self was just a little bland for me. I just finished playing Wind Waker when i was in the pre-planning stages of this mod, and after seeing that logo in the temples, i knew it was the perfect fangrill. I looked around on the net, but couldnt find a single pic of it, so i ended up taking a pic, and working with it in photoshop

small little update
i've been working with the front panel/door, bondoing and sanding to get it perfect. Right now the door and front panel are residing in my garage, but tomarrow they will be sanded to perfection (hopefully).

I also have almost finished up the side panel, just need to maybe sand it once more lightly, another coat of clear, and then go to it with the rubbing compound.

Alrighty, update time
this time, its mostly been a lesson in frustration
I concidered and mused over putting a floppy in this rig, even though I really didnt want to. Eventually I gave in and figured, ehhh why not, it wont hurt. I took apart the floppy with no problems, sanded, painted, and started to put things back, when the thing started falling apart... first the top part under the actual top, then a random spring flew out when i was trying to put that part back in... after that I knew it wasnt going back together, so i decided to do this.

first by dremeling off the area around where a case badge would go, then came bondo time. First time around, I got it perfect... then the next day realized i didnt use enough hardner.... arrrrgh.. so I scraped it all off (as best i could) and had another go.

This is a shot of the 2nd round, after applying the new bondo coat on both the door and front panel. I sanded away on the door... to find out that the old bondo that was still left was coming back to haunt me... so i ended up scraping all the new bondo off, and found out that the unhardened bondo made the surface melt slightly.. ack
i'm going to give up on this door, and try a clean palette with the spare (thank you so much antec!!)

After that, I sanded down the front nicely, and decided it was time for primer

after priming, i see a few small errors that i just cant stand. I will be applying another application of bondo, smoothing thinly and hand sanding - i think using the drill sander caused me to be a little over zealous, resulting in the red circled area (if you can notice it, its basically not completely even with the original surface in some areas)


ahhhh, so much to do, and winter is quickly approaching

I have decided not to bother with using this case as my Art final project, but instead using a different completed mod. Theres no way i'll get this done by december 5th haha

As you might be able to tell, my favorite part of the Zelda series is the Master Sword. If I was the one modding a case for a Zelda theme, the window cutouts would be a triforce symbol with a mastersword underneath it. But hey, that's just me.

Finally, another update haha
The weather, and school finals, as well as many other things have delayed me. I've done a bit of work, but not much dealing with painting, because the tempratures have dropped significantly, and the weather just isnt being very easy to work around.

I gave the painted side panel a good rub down with 3M rubbing compound, and then waxed with Meguiar's gold class liquid car wax.

and sanded. I was pretty happy with the results except for one little part that i had to re-spot putty up.

I took out the floppy and hard drive racks, taped their handles, sanded, and gave them a good coat of primer. Luckily enough, as soon as I finished priming, and was headed to take them inside, it started snowing hahahah.

Are you using spraybombs, or a gun?

If you're using a gun, I'd suggest using a quick reducer for the cold weather, rather than a medium or slow reducer. You'll have to be quicker applying your paint, but it won't wrinkle.

I've been thinking about some sort of Metroid Prime mod, possibly a paint job on one side using a stencil and a window on the other side. But that's as far as I have gone (in my mind). I haven't even looked at any possible victims yet.
Also about the window, I'd like to make it a custom design, samus in ball-mode. But all of this is way beyond my skill. I'm still just planning my first paint job. :rolleyes:

I'm concidering cutting a big ovalular shape out in the front, then using some plexi to mount the fan in the center.. hopefully that will work out good haha

lol, what you need to ask yourself is if you'd realised before you cut the hole, would you have done anything different? I think having it off centre would have looked stupid anyway, especially with the raised shape of the panel.

I was thinking about doing mine on a full tower, maybe a Lian Li 70 or something like that... I was going to have a picture of Samus holding her gun in a pose on the right side (i want it airbrushed and its beyond my budget or skill, so id have to have it done). I think it would be cool to have one big fan grill in the front of her in ball mode and just have the lines in her ball be the opeing and have a slow crappy LED fan behind it, would almost seem like its rolling, would be almost pure astetics though. I dunnno what to do with the window though.

Zelda rule, I remember the one on the old super Nintendo some many hours well spent and that suit of red armour looked so dam cool and how you could rescue the black smiths mate that would help you make that super sword.

I find it funny that the 1st Zelda that came out on the N64 had loads of the super Nintendo game in it however it did help you when it came to playing it however there was so much new stuff in there as well it made it all worth while.

Time for a update, eh :D

Today I worked on removing the top and bottom of the case from the frame, by drilling out the rivets.

And thats the finished result. Since I had never drilled out rivets before, I learned a few things. At first I used a size too small drill bit and that made things a lot harder - bumped up a notch and they came out very easily (I only wish I had used the bigger one for more of the rivets, Doh!)

Finally got the riveter in the mail from harbour freight (they sent the wrong thing the first time, so it took forever to get here)

I've never used a riveter as well haha, so it'll definately be a learning experiance (albiet not so hard haha)

I guess since i've had such a lack of updates, I should probally give away a small secret that isnt completed yet. For the case's side panel door latches I wanted to give it a feeling of link's boots (you know, brown, with a gold buckle). During summer/fall I had this idea, and since it wouldnt be hard to do outside of the other painting, I took care of painting them brown

Alright, time for a small update - its been too long not to do one

I just got a new mouse, an Microsoft Intelli-Mouse Optical. I chose it for the price, back/forward buttons, and modability, beige is nice to work with. I plugged it in for about 5 minutes to test, and then it was immediately taken apart haha.

THe tri-force symbol isn't hidden too much, and if he decides it is, you could go around the edges very thinly (like barely touching the decal) w/a sharpee to make it stand out a bit.

I'm gonna play the devils advocate and say green with black. I mean when you think zelda, you think green. Everybody has seen a black mouse before, but a green mouse would truly be unique to your zelda case.

And the triforce will stand out fine.

I just thought of an interesting idea. You know that red clear plastiv on the end of the back of the mouse with the moon star symbol. What about scraping that out and putting a picuture of a Rupee there? I mean a red rupee is perfect! (20x better than a green one hehe!)

What about this idea, although it would require some SERIOUS modding.

Turn your mouse into an ocarina. You would have to reshape and remold the mouse, but it would be worth it. Pain it blue. Maybe even make real holes where they are suposed to be and fill it with clear plastic.

What do you think? That would really top of your project tho.

Alright, so i worked on the mouse a bit the other day, and i think it turned out really nice, but more on that later.

Taking apart this microsoft mouse wasnt hard, but took me a second to make sure i didnt break anything.

The back/forward web buttons are easy to take off, as seen colored with green arrows in the image above, all you do is pop them out. The main clickers and scroll area was a bit touchier, labeled with red arrows, because the 3 clips are somewhat hard to get off. I found that pushing them outward and pulling up on the main part one at a time was the easiest way to get it off.

Now for the painting... oh was it fun

the temprature around here at any given time is usually under 20 degrees F (right now it's 9 and thats not including windchill), and snow comes down randomly day per day. Earlier this week there was a really nice day, snow was on the ground, but the sun was out, and no snow was falling. So i took advantage of this :D
I decided to go with the main part being green, as it fit the case more (sorry you black over green fans hehe)

I first brought out the side clickers and the scroll wheel area, and set them up on my antec box, ontop another smaller box, and vinyl dyed. Quickly i rushed in... which was a mistake haha
i ended up tripping and dropping the scroll part and one of the clickers. After several angry words, cleaning and wiping down the dirty/smudged parts and having to toss my sweatshirt in the wash due to paint (luckily it didnt stain), i went back to business and fusioned the main section. I went back and gave the black parts another dying, and waited a couple hours to inspect - and I liked what i saw :D

The black vinyl dye was too flat to go with the gloss of the fusion, so i decided i'd tryst giving it a good coat of regular gloss krylon, and hope for the best.

A day later, I was anxious to put it together, so i did :D

the blue from my media computer throws off the color of the second picture, but the first is an accurate reprentation of it.

I hope to find a source for the decals/stickers soon (i'd concider doing it myself, but my color printer isnt that great and painting something on makes me a little wary), and get them made so i can add them on. When I do, of course i'll post pic's

I will be using this heatsink (thermalright slk 800a) / the fangrill in the zelda case, but not sure about the fan - its a neon translucent green el cheapo. This is in my current case now hehe

I imagine that putting a clearcoat over the paint would help...but when I went to paint something w/Krylonfusion I noticed that it said it would become 'totally chip resistant in 7 days'...not sure how total 'totally' is but I imagine that it would take a pretty good beating to chip the paint..not sure.

I have to add to what I said a bit, now that my drive faces are hardend up. If you touch the Fusion before it is FULLY hardened (not just appears dry) it will leave a very good fingerprint, and the print will stay; after it is totally hard (this does take more than 7 days, for me at least, for some reason), there are no problems, the Fusion can be touched like crazy.

Here's a mini update, i'm sorry i havent been doing much :(
sort of like a sideproject, and this isnt an offical update or anything

i've been working on modding a gamecube to go along (but not inside) with this case. So far, its been completely gutted, i've changed the led to the magic secret color of the pc case, and i've made an attempt at the region switch. I'm having trouble getting the switch soldered on correctly, mainly i think it's due to the gauge of wire i'm using (i ripped the system speaker wire off of an old 486, because the gauge i bought was bigger than it)

the cube will have a matching paintjob, and some other little mods that are secret, but when i get more of it done, i'll make an offical update in this thread with it (or i could start a new thread)

another secretive project i'm working on is to my current premod case hehe, cutting a link window (which i'm taking to the texas gaming festival on valentines weekend this month) I wish i finished the zelda case so i could take it, but things just didnt work out as you guys can tell hehe

pics of everything will definately be up as soon as i can get them finished (that way i dont pull an update that takes so long haha)

wow, our mice look almost identical...but I bought my from alienware, lol! My green is a little darker, but when you started talking black and green mouse, I looked down "hey, he could do that..." and sure as anything...you did.

Man and I thought/hoped my Zelda case was going to be unique oh well not like yours though I’m going towards the Hyrule side and not too Linkish. Triforces and writing gold and blue etc.

yeh as clear coat over the fusion would help it. fusion doesn't chip but it will scuff and loose its shine. happened to me.

phrkshw, I welcome you as a new member, but I have two tips for you:
1: Use the Edit button, it makes the mods not want to kill you as much. It's to the bottom-right of your post, next to Quote.
2: Don't censor bypass, the mods don't like this, and they don't hesitate to ban.

wow, i havent been in the modding section of the froums and actually READ the threads, but this is awesome, nice mod on the case, andy! i really like the mouse, that is uber-awesome,

also maybe a tip, i guess u could try making that blowhole in the front more circular instead of the lop-sided oval it is, but still, awesome, mod, i wish i had the time/money/patience to do something this lengthy

the blowhole in the front bezel is circular, but i'm also thinking of getting one of those blowhole windpipes that mnpc-tech's bill has on his site. It'd look cleaner overall with it in there.

i've been meaning to get some new speakers, and if i did, they'd be one of the under $100 5.1 sets - so i might just try something like that :D thanks for the suggestion

Maybe you missed something? Go back and look one more time. Cuz they are on like all of the pages except this one and maybe the one before. But for me I see picures on at least pages 1-5.

First off, i'd like to say that i'm sorry for the long hiatus. Today I spent 3 hours modding, and i'd love to post the update.. butttt unfortunatly i dont have a digital camera at the moment to do so :(
My sister is using it on her trip to gatlinburg, TN. She'll be home sunday (the 2nd of may) so expect pics soon.

things i did in the 3hr period

*Painted drivebay covers
*Added to mouse mod
*Added to fan mod
*Adjusted screw holes (drilled) on back of case so they could fit a fan without the stupid purple fanholders
*Sanded case frame
*primed case frame

A real update will happen soon :D

This is with the first coat of primer, i need to give it another coat - but I ran out.. gotta pick up some more. The front looks like crap now, I know, but i'm thinking about using acrylic to create a new fan mount - to center the front fan. More on this will come in a later update ;)

Here are the drive bay bezel's - all painted and ready to go. I'm happy how well they turned out, the picture doesnt show how evenly the paint is and how nice they look.

I used cd labels to do a few stickers - The fan got a bomb makeover, sure it'll be hidden behind one of the fangrills, but its the little details that count :D

I also did the bottom of the mouse, with the heart bar.. turned out ok, but the camera just couldnt take the picture correctly. I should have taken the mouse outside, i'll bet it would have turned out better.

That's all I have for this update - meager, but I hope to get more time to work on it.. When school lets out (one week to go! hurrah!) I'll have a ton more free time, which will allow me to complete more work on many things I need to do (including a review for ocmodshop.com)

I remember playing the SNES version of Zelda and the N64 versions over and over again. My wife also got hooked to Zelda 64 and she has played it many times. She is not willing to play the SNES version though (I think it is the best version).
