just bought an AMD TBird 1.2ghz w/266FSB and an Abit KT7A mobo. im using the thermometer software that came with my board, and it says my case temp is 35*C, and that my cpu temp when idle is around 38-40*C. i start to play a game, any game, Freespace 2, Diablo II, etc.., and i check the cpu temp after playing for about 15 minutes, and the temp is up to 64*C, is that too high for the processor, cause im too afraid to push it much more, i havent played a game for any longer than about an hour at a time cause i dont know what my cpu's gonna do. btw, i have a ThermalTake Chrome Orb for a HSF. any recommendations? and i did ur little calculator thing

66 x .17 c/w = 11.22 + 35 = 46.22

Welcome to the forums!! Your temps are really high, and I think you should replace that ORB with something better. There are many good HSF:s on the market, like Global Win, OCZ, Alpha, Taisol, Swiftech...etc.. Use some thermal paste like Arctic Silver on the cpu core when you install the heatsink.

Yep u should get rid of that nasty Chrome Orb, but be VERY careful when u remove it. Orb's are know as CPU killers...
Justy303 makes some good examples of what u could get as replacement, but there is more. U will also need some good case cooling. Be sure to have a good airflow in ur case.
Good luck!

Had the same problem...ditched the orb today and replaced it with a Taisol. WOW. This thing is big. Idle temp 29C. Haven't done full load yet. I'll let you know when I do.

OK lets start.

What is your ambient(room) temp?
See other post here for CPU temp questions where I gave some advise to someone else. It might help.

I copied my reply here for easy reading.

There's two very good coolers:
Millenium Glaciator and my favorite the Swiftech MC462 with Delta. I use the swiftech and is very happy with it. But it is noisy and almost twice the price you want to pay. The glaciator is about $45 with shipping I think and people seem to get good results with it. To order look under the reviews on the frontpage and you will find it.
When you install a new cooler make sure to clean the cpu core and cooler properly with acetone(old nail polish remover) and medical alchahol. Both can be found at a pharmacy. I clean with the acetone first and then with the alchahol.

Next ensure your cooler is nice and smooth!! You may want to lap it. See cooling section.

Now try to get Artic silver II for your thermal compound and apply according to instructions. This will already help you a lot with the cooler part.

Now to get cold air onto the CPU. I cut a hole in my case for a 92mm fan right onto the HSF area. I then mounted an 92mm fan blowing onto the the HSF from outside. This will of course be utterly useless if the air from the new case fan is not focussed on the HSF. I made a pipe from carton by rolling it and taped it to the new case fan. I measured it that less than 1/2 is between the pipe and the hsf fan. I have another 92 mm fan on the side panel blowing in and a 92 mm on the to sucking out and the back 80mm fan as well as the Enermax 92 and 80mm fans sucking. I also have 80mm fan at the front bottom vlowing in. You might not want all the fans and I not sure they all help. But to get the air out on the same side panel, you might justwant to add a 92mm fan sucking out.

Good luck and hope it helps!

BTW my CPU temps are 33C(90F) idle and 37 C(99F) load with ambient of 22C (72F). Not the best, but pretty good for me at 1.536 with a 1.33 AXIA.

If u r measuring ur temperature through the hardware monitoring system on the board you're wasting your time. Forget about it. As a result I would state taht it would probably be more beneficial to judge your temperature on the "does it crash?" basis. If the computer is stable quit worrying. If the computer ain't - there's something wrong.

Always ensure a high integrity jointing between CPU die and Heatsink. A lapped heatsink base and a proper heatsink (not that Chrome Orb) would be advantageous.

BTW - I don't see how you can calculate your supposed temperature from a Chrome Orb using a C/w of 0.17!!!! That kinda ratio belongs to a Swiftech MC462-A or better.

Remember that the Chrome Orb is a novelty item. It isn't actually very good at it's job. Remove it and put a real cooler in it's place. If you want something quiet, perhaps try the Taisol CGK760092 with the copper base. In my system right now with a Duron at 1164Mhz and reading a mere 45.6°C using a calibrated probe (not the hardware monitor) placed under the HSF and touching the die.

heh, i agree with andy on this one, i started to read your calculation and my eyes kinda bugged outa my head when i saw that your chrome orb gets .17 c/w...dont know where you heard that. anyway, I say get a Glaciator, I havent used it yet (see below) but ive read only good things about it and its half the price of the swiftech.
