Hi, I'm new to the whole Athlon scene and I just built my first system based around the AMD processor. I bought the new 1.4 but for the life of me I can't get it to even run At 1.4.... I updated my bios for my motherboard, everything seems to be running well, all the fans are running good and it doesn't even get warm to the touch after running prime95, hotpc benchmark, and set@home for 12 hours (tried it last night) This is very disturbing and I'm worried that my chip might be hosed even though I just got the silly thing and took every precaution to keep it perfect before I attached everything and put it all together. The bios is very confusing that iwill uses. I set up my pc133 ram to run at 5-2-2 (fastest) and it seems to make no real difference, I set it at cl-2 like my ram is rated and sometimes it registers as only 123 megs of ram for some odd reason. My settings for my PC right now are at default but I have to set the multiplier at 14X to get it to run at 1.4, this doesn't seem normal? I also can set the power only up to 1.85 and I'm just rathar confused and running around in circles trying to get it to operate correctly. I'm hoping someone here can tell me what I'm doing wrong or point me to the local newbie faq that can answer all of my questions cause I'm really in a bind and can't find anything about anything so far on the web.
Thanks in advance,
Alik

1st off I bought a 1.4 and I could't get it to work out of the retail box it wouldn't post then all of a sudden it posted at 1400mhz but then froze at bios screen so i rebooted it and then it would never go on again it turned out I got a bad chip if I where u double check that ur CPU L'Bridges aren't coverd in artic silver make sure u just put dab of artic silver over the CPU core and not a chunk u don't want the artic silver on anything else but ur CPU Core if this doesn't work I suggest calling AMD and talk to a guy named ALex if you can. Also make sure that your screws to your box aren't touching the motherboard, make sure you have spacers made out of rubber or what ever over the screw then on the motherboard im talking about when you put ur motherboard in the case and screw it into the case you know those screws ? those are the 1ns you gota make sure they aint touching the case it can cause a short circuit with millions of probs. Also check if you'r L1 bridges are closed. If you need further help ill see what I can do email me ReTiCuLeX@si.rr.com

run your setup with the multiplier 10.5 and the FSB at 133 and then try it and see what happens. That is an easier multiplier for the chip.

I made completely certain my L1s were closed reset the chip and everything but still no go, the best I can get it to run is at 1398 and oddly my iwill won't allow a 133fsb just a 132 which adds to my confusion. I am going to try to call amd today if I don't get an email back from their techies by noon. I am thinking maybe it's my motherboard. It didn't come with any plastic spacers or anything so I probably shorted something out :-( Hopefully I won't have to spend another couple hundred dollars to replace everything. I appreciate the advice.
Thanks,
Alik

Did you check the mobo for an fsb jumper? Sometimes you have to set the jumper to allow for the 133+ MHZ fsb. There are 2 settings 100 or 133. 100 only allows uo 132MHZ, the 133 setting allows up to 160 or so. Give that a shot, good luck.

Ok man this is what you need to do READ THE DAMN USERS MANUAL!!! Ok now that you have read the users manual you found in there that there is a jumper just to the right of the CPU that sets the FSB 100 or 133 this was all the way back to page 6 in the book . As faras the plastic spacers if you put the Mother board on the stand offs that came with the Tower you should have no problem. What you have is one of the most stable board that has ever been built it is capable of FSB as high as 200 and multipliers over 15 X as you can see in me signature I am running the same board and love it. You realy do need to set down raed the owners manual from front to back at least 1 time and from what I gather from your knowlage of building computers you need to read it 2 or 3 times this is not intended to **** you off just to make you think and under stand that though it looks and for the most part is very easy to build a computer you need to read read and read some more so you know exactly what you are doing befor you start. I hope I have helped you and not pissed you off. Read the book and build a MONSTER to be reckond with. YOUR FRIEND Good luck.

Heres the deal with the 1.4. I have a 1.4 on a iwill kk266 motherboard. I can get it stable at 1.57. Make sure that your fsb jumpers are set at 133 so that it can boot at maximum performance. Second .. older enermax power supplys are not supported by amd. I have a new enermax 430 watt which is working ok. Lastly... make sure you have a realy good fan( no lower than say a globalwin cak38 if you plan to overclock or even keep the thing running cool at default speed) The 1.4s run hot as hell. Heres what i use:

iwill kk 226, swiftech 462-A, 512 mhz decent 133mhz ram.
amd 1.4 @ 1.57 / 11x143
