There is never that much hype from Remedy, since around here, we like to finnish (pun intended :)) things off well and Remedy is not a huge company like Valve, so theyre not in just for profits (attleast yet, I hope they never will).

sorry for the long wait.....
had some sound problems with this game.
almost every setting for sound that remedy recamends seems not to work for me.
need to do more testing, but I turned off EAX, multi-chanel, bla bla.

anyway, the game seems good but it's still real early....remember I had sound problems....couldn't realy hear what max was saying when I played in game.
seems OK now.

OK, now the realy good news.....
my system seems to be overkill for this game.
running at 1280x960 32bit, 4xAA and 8x AF....getting 70-100 FPS in the first few mins.
can't realy speak about the graphics, again I only played about 15-20mins.
in the begining, there are alot of cut cines, so don't expect to play for real untill a few moments.

with the frame rate I'm getting and the nice graphics....
I can't see why any one with a slightly new vid card can't play this and enjoy it to the MAX.

I just got out of class today and I picked this up! After finishing the Max Payne 1 roughly two years ago I vowed I would buy MP2 the day it comes out! Rockstar and Remedy should feel honored as this is the first game I actually bought in a loooong time (that does not mean that i dont play a lot of games tho ;) ) due to how good I thought the first one was. Ill let you know if its definitely worth the $50 tho, which i bet it is, but i havent found any reviews for it yet.

what is so bad with this screen shot?
besides the GF2 vid card type frame rate?

update, OK, EAX works but the sound still needs a patch for 5.1 set-ups....at least I hear everything fine but voices from NPCs are still positional only (think, only coming out of one speaker...the closest one to the person).....and no center chanel sound suport.

man that pic you showed.....I would get 112fps with my set up at 1290x960 4xAA and 8xAF.....is this bad?

all boxes are...how should I say this.....
fallable? moveable with bulets too. things roll, shift, fall...and bulets can go through simple items or boxes.

sorry for all the bad spelling...I'm tired, and I realy can't think.
I just got a few new games, and I'll play this when I'm finshed with them.
I only played MAX because you guys wanted to know what it was like.
I hope I helped.

the best thing I can say is....if you liked MP, then you'll like MP2.

ALRIGHT! I have been playing MP2 ever since my last post, i think for like 3 hours or so now! So i think im fairly qualified to write a quick synopsis of the game. I will run you through the feeling I felt so far. Right from the get go the game doesnt 'seem' different than the first one. I played the first one in and out. I was at first expecting something different, i dont know why, i guess since it was made by rockstar this time. Anyway, i thought the graphics or whatnot would look a lot different etc but then i realized that the first was such a good game in so many ways that they could have screwed something up by changing a lot. I am already on Part 2 Chapter 5 or so and Ive come to realize that this MP2 has been improved upon simply the amazing aspects of the first. Alright, there are slight changes in bullet time mode: i noticed that when using bullet time, not dogding the effect is different, it gets kinda blurry and turns a little of a different color. It looks good. Next, it takes a while to get this to work and so on but using bullet time or dodging and using some funky key patterns your character (will explain later!) can do a LOT of cool stunts/tricks/moves that were unthinkable before. If you thought that MP1 was matrix like, MP2 is O SO SWEET! Regarding the character line, you not only get to play as Max Payne, but as Mona Sax! First off, for a pc chick, i think shes the best looking character yet. Forget tomb raider, that chick in UT2, Mona Sax looks real good, as so does Max Payne, the character models look a LOT better and more importantly they look more realistic due to there humanlike movements. Also, i like the way you get to play as two players, being where i am in the game, i just ran throught a kicka$$ level with Max, while Mona was sniping...( YES theres sniping in this game! i remember someone was complaining that the first didnt have it...) then when Max is done, i went to the same level and am playing as Mona while Max is the pc and i run through the level as tho through her eyes helping Max out.
I hope im not tossing too many details out. Anyway, what else, when i started the game a new story is being tossed at you and you kinda walk through it, so theres not much action, but it gets you hooked. Its like a snowball effect, i remember the first one had it. I am SOOO hooked right now. The level im playing is just amazing. There are a bit of new guns, and i like that you can use secondaries (molotov, grenade etc) simultaneously now, unlike MP1. What else was I gonna say  ... O yea, i missed a big part. Like someone already mentioned, a lot, lot more of the map objects are interactive. I think someone called them 'fallable' or something. Its a really cool effect. It adds to the realism in ways that MP1 lacked. Now you can hide behind barrels or whatnot as protection, then when ready just tip them over and spray the enemy. Or you can move objects around, or simply shoot stuff over thats in your way. THe ragdoll engine whatever its called that adds that effect when you shoot someone is nice. Its also pretty realistic, and it makes for interesting scenes as each killing is different than another.
At the moment im unsure how to check my fps, can someone tell me the keys to use? but the game is running real nice, i have antialising set to 4x and am running at 1280x1024, everything else is set all the way, and the game options are running at highest. Plays really well. Another thing that i noticed is this game is much more fluid than the first one. I dont know how to describe it... all the scenes, all the movements seem to connect much better than the first. Like it seems that even just using the bullet time or dodge that once you stop the game has a fluid transition, i kind of remember the first being a bit more static, ie. little things have been implemented which you may or may not notice but they make a world of a difference- in the first game if you did a dive while spraying, the moment you hit the floor your gun stopped firing and you automatically stood up, just then could you resume fire. Now in MP2, if your in a heavy gun fight and hold the trigger while dodging, when you hit the ground you stay laying sideways, or flat or however you hit the ground and while laying there you continue to shoot, so i guess thats what i mean by fluid. Another thing is, in the first game i didnt use the bullet time mode much, the one where you are running around in slo mo, i only using the slo mo dive/dodge, in this game tho the way the two work together is much better, and there is an equal use for both. I sometimes even use the bullet time more just cause it adds a lot of cool effects that look like they are directly from a movie.
Last thing, I forgot the most important part. The way this game is laid out, regarding the cinematic style is is way better than even the first. From the moment you start playing you really feel like your playing characters in a movie, stupd stuff little stuff like when your introduced to an important character the gameplay stops and the camera zooms in onto the character with this slo mo effect and prints their name on the screen just make it so cool. Its sweet! Also, the cut scenes where ie you shoot someone and the camera follows the bullet are a lot nicer in this game, theres like this blurriness added and other effects to make it appear as though captured by a recording crew instead of a 3d animation.

Ok heres my last remark, one thing that i AM upset about is the lip syncing, i was almost 100% certain that this game would have lips synce to someone talking, the first MP did not, and this one MP2 appears not to either. There are some scenes that the characters lips dont move at all yet your hear there voice, other times the lips move but they are so off track to the speech its not even funny. I dont think this is a pc problem, perhaps an update will be necessary, but if it turns out that this game cannot recreate realistic dialog by lip syncing im kinda going to be upset. It takes away from the realism and on top of that, come on, its almost 2004, practically ALL 3d games now are capable of doing this, i cant believe the programmers or whatnot decided to ditch out and not work on this. Those of you who have played this game already, let me know whether or not it works correctly for you.
Ok i gotta stop there. I think i went too far, unless you guys want more info. Ima go back to my game! Let me know if you wanna know anything, but from the way it looks right now, this game is DEFINATELY worth the purchase, like i said before i rarely buy pc games and after how good the first was i was just compelled to give money to Remedy for all their work. Dont flame me, but others have also said this, screw Half Life 2, valve is taking its fans for morons, that game is so overhyped and yet valve decides to set back its deadline? Thats ridiculous. Max Payne 2's release date was announced a while back this year and it came out right on schedule, theres been little hype around this titles release, well more than the first but nonetheless, (the first Max Payne was kinda like the movie the Matrix, they werent expected to be huge hits and didnt have a big following yet became HUGE hits). Buy the game!

ps. if you want somescreen shots let me know

I'm just glad to see some good games, finally after a long, dry summer. I'll have to put in an order for this one too. The first was awesome, but i'm in the middle jedi academy, started freedon fighters (hate the save system, too PS2), just loaded halo, after all ya'll's yacking about it, and now I've got to get MP2. I'd better finish one of the other first. Jeez, what a wonderful fall it's turning out to be!

Just picked up this MP2 today, looks awesome so far and runs great on my system at 1024 with 4XAA and 4XAF (haven't tried higher resolution yet).

I don't see anything about doing that new type of twirl dodge that Max does in the trailers and stuff, does anyone know how to do this or does it just happen sometimes?

T20
10-16-03, 08:10 PM
Hmmm, I just press the bullettime combo, while standing still, when the ammo runs out, he does the twirl, while reloading... looks damn nice.

The only problem with the game, is that sometimes the cursor is damn hard to see, when there are flames everywhere.... you dunno where you are shootin ;p

acesea
10-16-03, 08:13 PM
the way to do that twirl dodge is when ur in bullet time running around press the reload button, or when max is out of ammo he auto reloads and thats where he does that sweeeeeet a$$ reload move with the camera circling him and the screen slows down even more and gets blurry!
Just got on to mention that I beat the game. Im kinda surprised i beat it that fast. Jeez. Thats not really a good thing. But im hoping there more to it as more of the game types are now available. There better be like different levels or something, this cant be it!?! I played the game like 4ish hours yesterday, and then today for like 3.5, so say 8 hours of gameplay to beat it. Thats pretty dang short. It seems as though the first MP1 had a much more intricate plot that was unveiled to the player than this game. Anyone knows how many parts and chapters there were in the first game? I dont think this should spoil it for anyone or anything but i finished the game on Part 3, chapter 8 or hmm, might of been chapter 5, whatever, somewhere in that vicinity.
Looking over that tho, phewww great game!

acesea
10-16-03, 08:15 PM
wait now that i think about it, thats realllly not right. i beat that game way too fast, thinking back now i remember MP1 took me very long to beat. And i was trying pretty hard to get through it too. I remember id play hours a day for like a week to two weeks to beat it. this kinda sucks. i gotta get back to reality and do some work, but when i have time ill let u guys know how the other games are. Peace.

Captain Hilts
10-16-03, 08:33 PM
Oh okay, I just played it a bit more and tried that bullet time reloading thing, looks pretty cool, thanks for the tip.

Yeah the first game was kind of short, but not that short. I think it had three parts as well but some of the chapters were pretty hard so it took longer than just a few hours for me (although part if it was those two levels where Max is drugged, that was just plain annoying). Hopefully they'll throw us a bone and give us some new levels or something later.

The Fun House part was amazing. Great level architecture...

Im sure the game would have taken a lot longer if i did not run through it and save a lot etc. Im gonna have to give the more difficult settings a try.
O yea, and what someone meant by the 'mouthing' was not cussing, i think, but moreso that the lip syncing is not realistic, but they definately do curse in the game ;)
Here are some screenshots that i have taken. I think they look pretty nice. Watch out, theyre pretty big!

Man the rag doll physics are too cool. They fit this game so well and add a lot realism. Way to go to rockstar.

Game is awesome if you havent go pick it up!! :D

Well, I picked it up yesterday, but was too busy to play it until this morning before I had to leave for class. I played through the hospital for about 5 or so minutes. I have to say I really like the comic book-inspired narration scenes. I haven't really seen any lip-synching yet, so I don't know what's the deal with that.

I did however run into a freeze... That is the first time a game froze on my in years. I really don't think it's my system, since no games have ever frozen on me. Has anyone else experienced this? I can't remember exactly where it was. I think it was outside that warehouse right after you leave the hospital scene. I ran ino the alley and right before I reached the first stair/doorway on the left, it froze (or just kept playing the same frame and audio over and over.

Overall though, this looks like a sweet game. Much better than the first. The first one made me think of a Steven Segal movie. This one is like Dirty Harry/Lethal Weapon/Matrix. Rock on Rockstar, and don't let those little kids' parents shut you down!

Ive been playing the game a bunch lately... as the fact that i have already beat it should give it away. So id like to add that yes i too have experienced these crashes on my system, and i was too surprised because very rarely do programs crash like that. The game simply quits out of nowhere as im playing and puts me back to windows.

Anyway, i just wanted to add that the game is just so great! Im having a ball of time playing those extra options now, dead man walking is insane!!!! i think this is the best part of the game, for real!! I dont know if anyone is familiar with it, so you pick like from 4 or 5 level scenes that are farely small but perfect for the task. These scenes are closed off battle fields and on them there are some pain killers, some extra guns, and a bunch of these pods so to speak. After a few seconds enemy begin to appear on these pods and you have to kill them. After just a bit theres a TON of them and the idea is to stay alive as long as possible.

Just out of curiousity, id like to know how long people have been able to stay alive once they got to these extras. On all the levels ive been able to progressively get past 6minutes on all of them. It gets so tough its crazy b/c theres only so many painkillers, as for the guns and ammo, each guy u kill u get his gun. Nonetheless, it is tough. It took me a while on some of the levels at first to stay alive for just two minutes, so take my word, 6 is a LOT! There are a LOT of guys coming at you.

All i can say is if you liked that scene in Matrix Revolutions where Neo is getting attacked by like 100's of agent smiths, this is just like that!

Awww yeah, Max Payne 2!

Bought the game yesterday and played it for about 5 hours...it's immensely entertaining, because the physics engine is just so damn good!!! Screw half life 2, they have lost half of their reason to buy the game since they will not be the first ones to showcase the Havoc physics engine.

That said, I will also say that they went and made this game really hard right out of the box. There is only 1 difficulty level to start on(Detective-once you beat that you get to work onto harder modes of play, like in MP1). It's frustrating at times, but still fun, because each time that you get a little bit further, it involves mowing through 5 new thugs.

The story is really involving, I really felt like I had sympathy for the characters, and the NPCs introductions are done really stylistically. I like Mike the Cowboy especially, you find him early in the game :D

If you were a fan of the original, you should definitely go out and buy this game. If you never played Max Payne, its still an experience worth playing through, especially if your gaming rig can take advantage of the oodles and oodles of gritty, inner city eye candy.

edit: Oh yeah, and the sound in this game is AWESOME. Footsteps change with the surface you're running on, bad guys' have a wide range of voice signals(I particularly love their reactions to grenades and moltov cocktails), the screeching of tires and crashes when vans full of thugs pull up sound incredibly realistic. The way the vans sound from inside a building is also really well done.

Just another treat if you have a good EAX card...

all i can say is WOW !!!!

game gets hard at times when you have no pain killers and all red grrrrrrr !!! still you just have to go back to the game to play just 5 mins more and before you know its been an hour or so

there are few minor problems but this has to be one of the best out of box games, no hassle nothing install and play and physics engine is too good to be true just to give those people who have not seen it in action, everytime you kill a person that person dies in a different way how is that for being cool? try loading a level and killing a person from different angles and you will see what i am talking about :)

damn i have typed too much time to go back to game :D

P.S how do you take screenshots of the game? i mean is there any key or will the good ol Print Screen button will do the job?

it's as if the speach only comes out one speaker (very positional)
when someone talks.
if your not near them you can even miss what they say.
also max/bulet sounds are wacked if using multichanel check box.

I noticed the speach being positioned according to where the character was relative to Max, but I thought that that's how it's supposed to be. It makes sense to me that if you start moving away from them their voice will start to fade. I haven't noticed any problems with the other sounds.

micamica1217 the problem is that at times you hear max's voice coming from far away which makes it really hard to make out what he is saying and kinda spoils the story line that needs to be fixed otherwise i am having a totally awesome time with the game even tried playing it at 1600x1200x32 and it was swwwwwwwwwwweeeeeeeeeeeettt

I just picked up this game. I must say, that I'm very impressed! Rockstar did a very good job on it. I do have a couple of frustrations, however.

1) The games needs a 'Film Noir' slider, so I can TURN IT DOWN! The game is so film noir it's more of a joke than film noir. I can just picture it: Now, from the creators of Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne, Film Noir Cerial! "Without thinking, I crammed that deadly sliver of metal carrying the city's most infamous breakfast food into my maw. The tiny flakes snapped and popped, like the fingers of a mob snitch after they found 'im. It wasn't good cereal. But it was better than a gut fulla lead." :p

2) Player models. They could've improved them over the first Max Payne. They really don't look any different.

3) Bullet-time. While still cool, I find it almost completely useless. I do however like the new 'sepia-toned' look when you activate it, and the cool Matrix-esque reload sequence, particularly w/ the pump shotty and Dual Ingrams. Hella-cool.

The game plays incredibly well, even at 1152x864 w/ 4/8 AA/AF. Nice and butter smooth. The new ragdoll physics is a very nice touch. Bodies roll down stairs and land leaning against walls and such. Very cool. I also like that you can manipulate boxes and blow up walls in a very Red Faction sense.

I'll be sure to play more when I get off of work tomorrow ;)

My feelings on this game are mixed.

It's practically the same exact game as before with better physics and engine.

the game has a really dark feel to it, and the fun house had me jump a couple of times.

This game is cool but I was definitely hoping for more and am kind of disappointed that it feels like the same exact game.

I am only a couple hours in this game.

Hopefully it gets a little better.

Anybody run this on Window Server 2003 yet? I tried and tried last night, to no avail.

It will install just fine, but when you run the shortcut or .exe nothing happens and the CD autorun isn't any better - no video setup screen from which to start the game.

Compatibility mode does nothing.

My machine is dual booting with Win2K, a quick restart and reinstall has it working smoothly now, and I must say, what a wonderful wonderful game!!!

this was one of the best games of this year, i was really amazed mainly the physics engine that this game boast with, every kill is diferent and has a perfect human ragdoll detail, i already beat the game and i still play my favorite levels just to see them fly over the tables and chairs and intereact with everything around max, yes, i know it feels exactly like the first one but with much more detail on a much better engine. they would it probably screw up the game changing a lot from the original..... overall i think is a kicka$$ game.

Thats how it was with MP1 for me (just started MP2 today and cant really inveest a lto of time into it so I will probably take a while to beat it). I prolly re-played it about 5 times and re-pleyed cool parts many more times.

I think somting for get is just how good the first one was. I don't see what else you could have done to make the second one better withough having it be a whole new game (with the exception of multi player :/) The fact is (at least IMO) the first one was just so damn good that the second is just an update to the new graphical/physicsical(?) standards and a new story line.

Hrm..that is a very opinionative post though.

Not sure if this is what you're talking about, but after your bullet-time hourglass thing is completely yellow (I think you have to shoot three guys pretty quickly to get that), reload your weapon and you'll get the slo-mo cool bullet time thing. If you reload in bullet time before then, you'll still do the same spin move but you won't get the super slo-mo effect.

Well somthing I noticed that I REALLY like is the more people you kill the more bullet time slows down. And if you kill a lot of ppl then when using the sig or whatever it is (has a scope but is semi-auto/full-auto) you can start to see the bullet going to them in the scope and get headshots galore!

This combo your all talking about isnt really a combo....its just means that when you want to do a dive (shoot-dodge) it will enable bullet-time as well.

Not sure of it was mentioned, but MP2 uses the Havoc 2 physics engine (same as HL2) so this is game a really good preview of some HL2 effects. Its great in bullet time to shoot someone it the chest with 20 AK rounds and watch them be propelled 15 feet back by the impact!!! I love it when you play a game for 8 hours straight and are still amazed by the effects! Especially when usuing the mp5 scope during bullet time. You can see the indidvidual rounds travel and hit your target.

I have beaten the game in 1 day and I crave more.

If you add -developerkeys to the target you can switch a few things in the game.

Delete and Insert changes where you are in the level. There are certain pre-defined places where you start.

page up/down switches between all of the models in the game. This is how you get the naked mona model too. If you are really good at the game try and beat a level using the vinnie trojan doll model.

Home/End changes the game speed. Another interesting thing is it you make the game speed faster then default and hit bullet time nothing slows down, but when you kill people the game gets progressively faster. Try dead man walking with that...

F11 brings up some data about the game, most is useless imo but it shows the difficulty of the game. The more guys you kill the higher it gets, you die it goes back down. It also shows the game speed that you are currently set at.

F3 changes how the camera works. Hit it once and your character doesn't move. Hit it again and you move but the camera stays the same, one last time and it is back to normal.

That is all I've found so far, if I find more I'll be sure to post them.

P.S. They jiggle...

In that part where you team with the Italian mob guys it wasnt raining. And when you enter the masion for the last chapter it isnt raining as well.

PS-Flash...no they dont, not even when she does a cart-wheel (unless perhaps we are thinking two very different thoughts o_0 )

Flashfx2

Crash, if you hit F3 you can keep the camera still and just rotate your character.

Sandman, hitting F11 gets you a fps counter, but along with other crap that you don't want, I'd just use fraps if i were you.

nolife, I could be imagining it but I doubt it, I think she does when she jumps and runs.

BTW does anybody know of an all weapons cheat or something of that sort? I'd love to start the game with a striker :)

But take note, you have to add "-developer", not just "-developerkeys'.

And ya... I figured that out Flash... thnks though (I was lazy and din't read it throughly) I can't really tell but I don't think there is any bounage...

But the cameras and differnt models seem to mess stuff up a lot..

In the scene where you meet mona at her funhouse the first time you can change teh camer and see her in teh shower...

Anyone notice how when you load a game from a certain area and change characters with 'page up' and down keys it will set you back to a different part of the map?

developerkeys is pretty cool but does it offer anything really useful?

Well yes, but you can either skip forwards or backwards in the mpa (you lose your guns though), or just reload (F9 style) and it keeps teh model.

I am pretty far into the game, at the level where you play as Mona and I have not really learned anything about the story, when is the actual story revealed?

Here (http://db.gamefaqs.com/computer/doswin/file/max_payne_script.txt) is a script for the first game. I hadn't played the first one in about 1 1/2 years so it helped to clear up some of the story without having to play through the whole game again.

I just beat it. Fantastic game IMO. It was very much like the first MP, but I liked that one as well, so I have no problem with the way everything looked. Only thing that bugged me was their use of contractions, or rather a lack there of. Anybody else notice that they never said they're? cooky

If you use the Russian mobster guy's (for some reason I can't remember his name :/) model from when he has the borken arm he holds the second DE or other pistol in mid air w/o no arm... reloading is even weirder! its crazy neato!

That's sweet, I'll have to check it out.

Anybody try and beat a level using the vinnie trojan horse/costume thing. It's hella hard.

10-27-03, 01:08 AM
This sounds sorta weird since I've already beaten it... But how does it end again? I was paying attention, but a lot of things have happend since I finished the game, had to work like right after I finished it and it must have totally left my brain.
Basically who's dead?
Of course dont answer in this thread so you dont spoil it for anyone else, but PM me if you could.

I must say that was one tight game, slighty disappointed by the very ending, but still sweet. Time to go and play the other modes of play :D

If you ask me this game was to short. The replayvalue of this game is poor...

But it's a game you just have to like atleast the first time you play it.

10-28-03, 01:15 PM
Menthol try throwing grendes upwards, since he is throwing grendades to you that means you already have broken that "stage" thingie now you have to run around in circles and try to break that supports (four in total) which is holding a thingie on top of that fallen stage

okay its late in night here and as usual i am not making any sense lol

Extract and run the file named MaxPayne2BonusChapters.exe to install the Bonus Chapters.

Installing Bonus Chapters release adds two more Dead Man Walking Chapters into Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne.

Run the game and two new Chapters will be available under "New Game/Dead Man Walking" menu selection. Keep in mind that Dead Man Walking gameplay mode is only unlocked after you've completed the game for the first time.

The new maps are:
* Upper East Side
* Mona's Playground

The game ****ed me off since I was able to finnish it in 7 straight hours of playing. Some people might say that im crazy but I like to finnish things, lol. The game was excellent in all aspects, graphics, storyline, gameplay, ect.. except for the lenght of it. Only 3 Chapter and 8 Parts. But it also had like 4 parts that were a dreamlike state which are kinda boring.

it's short again????? Noooooooo......

That was the only thing wrong with the first one which was the most excellent of excellence except for being to short. Mabye that was a good thing sice then I could go back to my normal life.

Don't have it yet. Being a broke college student sucks...

10-29-03, 11:26 PM
The game was a tad short to me too, however the story was so immersive that i didnt mind, plus its always fun to just hop in and play with the bullet time stuff for me. I finished her in one sitting, but it was an all nighter, once i got into the story i had to finish it. I also concur on the broke college student, but somethings are too good to pass up, just means no beer for a while. :)
