Decided to lap my hs to see if I could get my temps down an extra couple of degrees. Upon re-seating my hsf, it seemed to go on really tightly, when I booted I got no post and could smell plastic burning. I switched off, lifted the hsf and found that the power cables from my fan were melted to the top of the CPU. A very good way of killing a TB 900. Perhaps this could win the award for stupidest mistake of the year.
On the brightside I ordered a new CPU from a mail order company and was told it would take 2-5 days for delivery. I was suprised to receive my chip in less than 18hrs. I now have a brand new TB 1000@1100, something to smile about I suppose.

Thanks for the laugh! I have done my share of stupid things don't worry about it. But don't do it again!

lol that is mildly humerous :) I have forgotten to plug in my fan on my heatsink, left the room, came back and my temp monitor is like at 170 F (this is after being idle), but it didn't die, guess I was a little bit luckier than u. At least u got a new faster CPU now though.

I don't think you'll win a "Darwin' for that bit of folly. :)

I've done worse. You do raise a good point about a careful inspection after making any sort of change prior to buttoning up, and booting up.

You've now an excellent opportunity to upgrade to that 400watt PSU in your posting sig.

That may be the funniest thing I have read today. Not to make light of your loss but that is a good one. I am glad you got a faster stonger and better CPU but do be carefull and do not burn this one too and fer shur do get that 400 watter that poor TBird has got to be thirsty man they like to drink power.

OH ya by the way did the lapping of the heat sink make any differance in your temps. understanding you don't have the same CPU do you by math and good guessing think it helped ( I know when I lapped mine it made about 3 C diff )

hehe... well that sucks that you lost your tbird. but that is just down right hilarious. but i have had a friend forget to put thermal compound when he was building a comp. cpu melted right through the mobo. that is a little worse one would think..hehe.

I think I got you beat dude. I was trying to do the pencil thing to connect my L1 bridges, but wasnt having much luck. It was a pain in the ass to keep taking the HSF on and off and I didnt want to break anything doing it either. I thought to myself- how hot can the processor get in the few seconds it takes to boot up and see if it worked w/o the HSF. Not too bright. It made it to the video card boot screen and turned off. I then thought dman, I better touch the cpu to see if maybe it got too hot. Mistake number two. I immediately burned my fingure and still have a blister on it 2 1/2 weeks later. It was a TB 1GHz. But good news also. I now have a AXHA 1.2. Happy days are here again.
Looking back that was fooking stupid of me, that thing must've lit up like a stovetop.

PS I decided to leave my new chip alone for the time being, but setting the multiplier to 12.5 (KT7-RAID) It automatically sets it to 104X12.5 and works at 1300. Which is pretty cool. Its running at 1313 right now at 54C full load.

I still think I have the best way of frying chips (this is all at work). First, buy a defective Abit motherboard, throw in a Duron 800 (the person was short of cash then) watch the little Duron fry, even though you have your processor and HSF seated correctly and everything. Look at the motherboard, burn marks all over it. Ok, so I send the motherboard back to Abit. They send me another one. Throw in a trusty 1ghz Athlon. Turn the sucker back on. Get this little frying smell... HOLY S$#@!!!! Unplug the ******* fast, and you got yourself another fried AMD. Think crap, what is it???? Look at the board, they sent back the one I sent them!!!!!????? (still has my company sticker on it and everything). Pissed, I call them up, and this time they say they won't RMA unless it is an authorized dealer we bought the board from. It isn't. So, I call AMD, and they take the 1ghz back. Send me a brand new one and everything, and I think -- very stupidly -- that maybe I had a case riser or something touching the motherboard on the back, so I just remove it from the case, plug in a power supply, video card, chip, and HSF, and let 'er rip. This T-Bird turned multiple colors on the bottom. It was kinda cool. Anyways, that's my story....
