View Full Version : How do you get such low idle temps
I have my 1333 @ 1540 (11x140) at the moment. Air cooled by and OCZ Gladiator w/Delta whiner. Idle temps are 22/43/27 in MBM.5. Running Sandra cpu and memory benchmarks in a loop temps change to 22/47/28. I don't think that is too bad, but what do I know. I just thinnk the idle temp is way too high. Case has an 80 on bottom front suckin' in, and Enermax 465 with 2 fans blowin' out. Added a 60mm Sunon on back (that's the size that was called for) at cpu level, blowin' out also. That dropped cpu temp 3 degrees. Thinking about an 80 in the side blowin' in at the cpu. Maybe even duct it a little. Will this help get the cpu temp down? System will run 1600 (12x133) with temp only at 48. Haven't tried anything else until I get some lower temps.

Twofan here is a link for you. I've used this tweak and it lowered my idle temps from about 43C to about 31C. Only one degree over ambient. It has to do with the way the cpu runs. Read the entire article as there are two programs that you will need one to change it to try it and make sure there are no ill affects (bsod), if there are you just reboot and everything is back to normal. If it works the second program will make it permanent.

The register that you want to change is 52. Change it to eb and you'll be amazed at the temp drop. At least I was.

whats an idle temp?????
I say this because I run F@H which keeps the CPU usage at 100% constantly. I never quite understood the obsession with Idle temps though, they don't really matter.

I guess idle temps are important if your cpu is spending a lot of time idle (might as well keep it as cool as you can then). But then why would your cpu be idle? If it ever is, you ought to run Seti or Folding as William suggested :D
I really am not worried about idle temps. If I am not going to use it, I shut it off. I just wondered how people got them so low.
Essentially, they have halt-on-idle implemented. If your bios had ACPI support and you enable it, and if your OS supports ACPI, like Win98se and ME (the only two I tested), then you can benefit from halt-on-idle. When the CPU is idling, it is issued a halt instruction, which runs it at a considerable reduced wattage. My CPU idles about 2C above room temp.
I like idle because I can slow down my cooling system during those times and it is much more quiet.

Theres nothing wrong with running rain though, it is very handy in case say the fan fails and you can run it. On my celeron with a FOP if I turn my cpu fan off the cpu temp rises to 45oC or so, rain can bring this down to 28oC, with all the fans except my psu fan the cpu temp rises to 65oC and rain brings this down to 30oC so it's useful in some ways.

The WPCREDIT trick on register 52 worked well for me.....
Duron @ 954 on a KT7A-Raid.... idle temp dropped 7-8 degrees C after.
