My dad want's me connect 2 PC's to share a cable internet connection. He moved in with his girlfriend in an apartment. He would rather have me setup a wireless connection vs a wired do to the wires of course (but will use wired if he has to).

But I'm thinking they don't need top of the line. I believe the 11mb transfer rate routers should be fine seeing as his internet speed is only 512k(up)\128k(down).
I don't think file transfering between the PC's is going to be much of an issue. I doubt they'll do much of that.

The PC closest to the router will be connectend by patch cable. But the other PC will be in the other room so it will need the wireless NIC.

Will these do in your opinion?

Linksys WMP11 PCI card

If they do decide to transfer files over the network what sort of transfer speed are we looking at with the hardware above? Will it be horrible?

Let me know, Thanks

I have 802.11b setup and its speeds are sufficient for me!! I find the speeds are more than enough for internet, and for data transfer its fine unless you plan to constantly tranfer huge files!

Cool that sounds good. There both in there 50's so I doubt that file transfers will be a big deal. They mostly need to split the cable connection. I'm sure they'll transfer a few files now and then. But not much I would'nt think.

Think I'll go with the setup above then. Seem's like the cheapest solution for them.

Just make sure you setup the WIFI to only accept connections from the mac address of the WIFI nic in the other room. This will prevent any other WIFI nic in the building to his WIFI router. I would also change the default dhcp address range as well as the routers ip addy. I think the lynksys has a default address of 192.168.1.1 (not sure though) but maybe set it to be 192.168.1.100) and I think it's dhcp gives out like 50 addys. Either tune this down to like 5 addys or turn it off all together and assign the WIFI pc a static addy of 192.168.1.101 and then a GW of 192.168.1.100 (the WIFI router) and the dns servers from his ISP. This will give better security in an appartment complex and minimize the chances of network conflicts in a close community

Yeah that's what I was gonna do. Shut off dhcp all together. That way it leaves no room for anyone to snoop.

But he decided to go with the wired setup instead. Just because it's better and cheaper.

Thanks for all the feedback guys.
