View Full Version : My homemade waterchiller

Well I had this old dehumidifier down in the basement that didn't work (kept freezing over). So I decided to rip it apart and make a water chiller. If u look in the pic below u see that I cooled the hotside by submerging the condenser coil in water and then using my heatercore to cool the water (from an old peltier system I abandoned). The coolside has anti-freeze and water in the ratio of 1 to 2, 2 gallons anti-freeze(no-diluted) to 4 gallons of water. http://ookabooka.kicks-ass.net:81/chiller.jpg
Sry bout the image, I will try to format and repost. Anyone know of a good jpg editor for linux?
P.S. yes that is solid ice around the coolside, it condensed straight to ice and formed a nice thick layer around the tub.

water cooled condensors= kewl :)
whats the coolant temp at?

Use the GIMP to edit you pics.
Let us know temps and overclocks please :D

ok ill use gimp after im done posting this. Right now it has a sorta thermistat on the cool side so it doesn't completely freeze over. So its not on continuously, only whats needed to keep this thing cool. I regretably don't have a thermometer to see how cold it is, believe I really wanna know. I know the hotside can get really hot (especially when it has to run long, like when its first turned on). Though I don't know the exact temp, I would say about 100F, enough to make me consider that the heatercore wasn't enough(GASP!). Funny thing is, that I plan to use the chiller to cool my 226 peltier system :). that ought to be interesting. . .
edit: well if u look in there, u see i have an aquareum pump, I had to use this because the coils would freeze over in the 66% water/33% anti-freeze. Looking at the chart, this tells me that the coils must be getting lower than 0F. then again, im not too sure.

Thats nice man, and sure beats walking to the fridge every 5 mins for a beer you can keep the cans right beside ya in the tub :)
awesome work

1 question...why do you have a fan on the cold side? shouldn't it be on the tub of HOT water?

that was the old fan from the dehumidifier, I didn't know where to put it, as it is wired to pretty much everything else. I cut the ground wire, so it doesn't move.

hook that ground back up and put it over the hot side...you should get some evaporation going there with it and help cool it down...heck make a bong system for it as well :P....did somebody say cascade?

nice, but come on hook everything up and posted some clocks:D

What refrigerant are you using? Remember phase Chang is at that temp. The water will be higher but ware it touches the coils it will be closer to the phase Chang temp:)

yeah i know, I dont' knwo what kind of refrigerant it is using though. It doesn't say on the compressor. I plan on hookin up my peltier to it, and have the coolant run through the coils before it is put back through the peltier, this way the peltier gets the coolest temps possible.
How much power does this cooling use?

It should be using r-22;)

I love images like that good work man :)

funny thing is, that the hardest part was bending the piping, as to not kink it. Other than that it was pretty straight forward. I'll probably get to hookin up the peltier this weekend.

wow
looks great. cant wait to see the results

correct me if im wrong, but it seems your making a beast as in
radiator and water to cool hot side to allow cold water to cold the pelt to cold cpu... why not cool the cpu directly with the compressor?
i suppose it would be a job to create the cooling plate you attach but it would eliminate a watercooler and a peltier.
as i said correct me if im wrong

im planning on setting up a system just like that but with a airconditioning unit! but thats a awsome set up tell me what is the temp of that monster!

basically it would be difficult to build a block for the cpu. If I did that I would have to make the block, and recharge the system. I was looking for something easy and cheap that would squeeze a few more degrees in. Keeping the hot side of the peltier at subzero temps ought to help a lil bit.

this can't be an original thought, but has anyone ever put a phase change (like a prommie or whatever else there is) directly onto the hot side of a big pelt like this ookabooka's got? it seems like the best of both worlds...
just a thought
mod on
i think there is a limit to the temperature that a tec can got to
might be about -40 deg i think
