View Full Version : Getting this dang chrome orb off...

I'm new to this type of thing so bear with me...

When I bought my T-Bird 900 it came with this crappy chrome orb lookalike hsf. (It may be a chrome orb But I can't get the thing off to check!!!)

I have declared the clip impossible to get off with just the human body. I have heard many people saying to use a screw driver of a pair of needlenose's. Thats all fine and dandy...but I honestly (ok quit laughing already!) don't see how to use them to pry that sucker off.

I have ordered a Millenium Glaciator and should be here within the next week. I wanna be prepared to slap that sucker on as soon as I get it so I can start safely overclocking. (My Idle temps right now are around 43, I think that they used some crappy thermal tape...)

Any ideas? Any How-to guides?

Anyway, if you have read this far thanks for bearing with my newbie self.

First off, I've never used an orb, so I don't know how their particular clips work, but what I'm about to say should still apply:

If you're in any doubt, take the mobo out the case and everything out the mobo (RAM, cards etc) - I don't have to do this for my PAL6035 or waterblock, but I do for my Taisol or FOP32-1 as they have really strong clips. Give yourself plenty of room to work around the hsf.

Other than that, just try to keep the heatsink base level on the core - I think the orbs attach with some sort of twist clip, so this might be easier than with others like the FOP series, which have a tendency to rock on the core. You will generally need a screwdriver or pliers, as your fingers will just squash and not apply the force needed. Good luck getting it off :-)

Phew!

I finally got that thing off about 5 minutes after I posted....hehe

To clarify, yes, it is a chrome orb....and I got it off with brute strength...of which I lack. (how ironic)

Thanks for your advice though... ;)
