View Full Version : Little dots beside core...
Okay, I'm haven't gotten into overclocking much yet, I just had a quick question. Beside the core of my 1Ghz T-Bird, there are about 20-25 or so SMALL dots, almost microscopic. What are those for, and does it damage the proc if thermal paste gets over them. I recently had a problem with a new rig with DDR mem, Gigabyte 7DXR mobo, and it was giving me all kinds of trouble. The problems hinted at either a crushed core (which I have experience with :( ) or faulty memory. I reassembled my older board (Asus A7V with PC133 mem), and it works fine again. But before I moved the proc back over, I noticed that that pink thermal paste crap on my HS had come off (probably with the second move), and some had melted onto those little dots. I scrubbed my chip with alcohol, inserted into my old machine, and it works fine. I don't know if the problem was with my mobo or memory, or with the chip (and after cleaning it it works fine). I don't have any other boards or memory to test my new stuff, and I want to know if that paste being on those dots could have been what was causing the crap (system can't find files, 3 registry crashes (in 15 minutes), etc. etc. etc...
Thanx for any advice you could give me.

er uh hmmmm.... little dots, well there are bridges around the core labled L1-L7 and they have various functions L1 control multiplier and the L7 controls the core voltage if they are improperly shortcircuted it can cause problems

woops forgot... most thermal paste is non-conductive and it is not a problem to get it all over the place. now the good stuff like Arctic silver has a low conductivity level but you wouldn't want to use an excessive amount
heres my tip if you wipe it up and it works its fine if it don't' your crying. always use your conductive paste sparingly
Thanks for the replies. I know what the L birdges look like. There's also some VERY LITTLE gold dots right next to the core. In fact, looking at it from about a foot and a half away it looks like they're touching the core. I got that paste crap all over them.
BUt thankx for letting me know about the paste. I have acrtic silver, but I didn't use it this time. WHat it was was that stamp-sized pink crap that' s on the bottom of CoolerMaster Hs/FAN's. I didn't know about that stuff...
Thanx for the information...I appreciate it!

That stamp-sized pink crap is what heat sink manufacturers put on there so newbie's can't say "what thermal paste?". It is thermal tape and is best removed from the HSF prior to application of thermal paste.
The pink chewing gumm stuff is not conductive, and barely heat conducitve, get it changed with anything but that, even cheap white goop
