I got a new 2.6C retail last week and since I started OCing it, it seemed like something was wrong. Please check my sig for my system's config. Here's where I was stuck at:
At 1:1 I was able to pass memtest86 at FSB=221, 2-3-2-7, Vcore=1.55V, Vdimm=2.77V which I guess implies the memory is ok. Prime95 would fail instantly, though. Raising Vcore up to 1.675V did not help.
At 5:4 I was able to pass memtest86 at FSB=250, 2-2-2-6, Vcore=1.63V, Vdimm=2.67V but again Prime95 failed instantly. Vcore=1.675 also did nothing.
GAT was at Auto-Normal-Auto-Disabled-Disabled. Temps were never over 49C including during Prime95 tests. And this is an Abit board which seems to report higher than actual temps.
Anyway, I started backing off FSB at 5:4 and even at 230 Prime95 failed in test 1 after like 2 minutes. Then last night I set everything back to stock and let Prime95 run for 6 hours. No errors.
This morning I was beginning to test again and set a "safe" FSB=240, 5:4, Vcore=1.6V, Vdimm=2.8V. Upon reboot there were bizarre vertical colored lines on the screen when posting. I reset my machine. Posted normally, entered WinXP normally. Installed motherboard monitor (was using SpeedFan all along) and as soon as I configured the temperature meter, it started beeping like crazy and displayed a whopping 98C on my processor. I quickly shut everything down and put my hand on the base of my 7000Cu and it was pretty cold. Could this be real...? Shouldn't the proc have turned itself down at 70C or something...?
I hurried out cause I had to pick up my new HD and was already late. Came back an hour ago and... now I can't even post. Actually the monitor doesn't even get a signal. I tested the video card on my old computer and it's working fine. I unplugged all peripherals - HDD, FDD, CD... nothing. The computer turns on, fans turn on, I've measured the PSU rails and they seem ok...
Sorry about the long story... I really believe the proc was bad all along... after all I didn't do anything extreme... so I guess my question is... can I be sure my processor died alone or has it taken the mobo with it...? Any way I can test it...(I don't have another proc around)?
Thanks,
