View Full Version : So I guess I can't watch DVDs on my PC...

Has anyone else here tried to watch Matrix Reloaded on their PC? The darn thing won't play. It's probably because of some stupid copyright protection. Before you know it, software won't even run on computers.
This is total BS. My computer IS my DVD player. I rather watch it on my monitor because of the sharper image. Besides that, I live in the USA, I have every right to watch a movie on my computer.
I guess their trying to stop people from copying movies and sticking them on P2P networks. Before you know it, you'll have to look to P2P just to be able to watch a movie on your PC.
I really think this copywriter protection thing is getting out of hand. Dose anyone else feel the same way as I do?

Hmmm... I am using InterActual. It worked fine for the behind the scenes dvd, but not disk 1. I'll give that other program a try.
The movie was so good I can't bare not being able to watch it on my PC. :(

I'm sure there are free DVD player program thingys to.
Altho I, personally, use WinDVD
Could it be that the DVD is meant for another region? and your DVD drive is region locked?

I have both "Power DVD XP" and "WinDVD 4" and the video quality on the Power DVD is much better (thats all run on a P3 850MHz Dell laptop)

I find that PowerDVD doesn't like to display certain DVDs properly. Most noteably some of my anime DVDs.
I stick to WinDVD for that. It's a good program, too. :)

i know that if you get a DVD in Europe it wont work on american DVD players. might be that kind of problem. you could always try encoding to your hdd and reading it from there
Worked flawlessly for me.
Which is a good thing too, b/c it was the first dvd I tried with my new dvdrom drive. If it wouldn't have worked I probably would have gotten all hyped up and RMA'd the drive.
btw, matrix reloaded is the only dvd that I actually own.

The anime "Vision of Escaflowne" was how I discovered the difference. I have the Complete sets of Kenshin, Vision of Escaflowne, and working on Medabots after all that I will attempt Dragon Ball. Anime Rules!!

I like WinFastDVD much better than PowerDVD. I've found some jerkyness in some scenes with PowerDVD that WinFastDVD plays without a hitch. Maybe it's the lite PowerDVD version that shipped with my Samsung DVD drive but I won't pay extra for a full version of something I didn't like that well to start with.

I'm with you, IMHO WINDVD is by far the best and most stable PC DVD player.
PS, I mostly watch DVD's from my Home entertainment center and after I last formated I didn't Reinstall WINDVD, But I did and I put Matrix Reloaded in (DISK 1) Just to see if it worked properly. It did, and I'm watching it now as I write this :)

Priceless is right. You couldn't pay me to use it. PowerDVD and WinFastDVD were free too and don't phone home either.

I got my WinDVD free, to.
Altho it was a legal way
I've had experience with WinDVD on my sister's laptop, and I have to agree that it is a bit better than PowerDVD. However, I have two copies of PowerDVD (one came with my drive, the other with my video card), so I just use them :D

You have to be careful using some of the free DVD software, its a known fact they bundle spyware into the software ;)

The reason for them bundling spyware in the free versions is to pay for the license of the "free" DVD player software that they have to pay for in order to give it to you for free. The MPEG-2 codec that dvd is on is a patented and copy protected technology. This means that someone had the forsite to say,"You can all use this codec as long as I get some money."
I got PowerDVD with one graphics card and WinDVD with another and I like WinDVD much better, I have no probs at all with it, where I get the jitters with some DVDs using PowerDVD.

Whenever a program tries to get online, ZoneAlarmPro lets me know. Neither PowerDVD or Leadteks WinFastDVD would get through if they asked for permission. So far I don't recall either asking when I use them. Ad Aware and Spybot didn't find anything either.

yup! no spyware in mine too. Both are lovely players, I dont know if they are free though, coz I got them bundled. Both players play "The Matrix reloaded" for me too.

Yah, Matrix Reloaded nailed me too. Although in all honesty I can't say that it was the whole of my problem as my DVDs have not worked right since I started watching the Incredible Hulk 6 DVD set a couple of weeks ago (why 25 year old made for TV B-grade sci-fi needs that type of protection is lost on me).
Once I found this thread, I tried WinDVD and PowerDVD but neither one of them made the situation better. Then I tried two more players I got from tucows. Each new player in fact made the situation worse. I finally gave up and reformatted my C drive and went with a fresh version of windows. That seemed to fix my problem. Now if the Hulk DVDs work then I will have to conclude that the issue was with my system from the beginning and not with the DVDs.
Use VideoLan (http://www.videolan.org) if you need a free player.
Matrix Reloaded worked fine in my laptop and one my friend's computer.

what happens when you put disc 1 of reloaded in your drive? i have the extended version of LOTR Fellowship of the Ring and it tells me that i have an unformatted disc.

That VideoLan is pretty nice and it'll work on just about any nix there is too.
Do you think a Xeon PIII 550MHz box running both w2k and Debian could play DVD movies decently?

I have been trying NVDVD for the past week. Very pleased with it. I have been a longtime PowerDVD fan so I am in the process of testing numerous dvd players to see which provide the best quality, sound reproduction, and stability for my machine/tv.
Does NVDVD have good deinterlacers to choose from?
All software players oughta look the same except for their deinterlacing.

It workd fine for me, on windvd, powerdvdXP and the crap that comes with dvds. use anything but the crap that comes loaded onto the dvd.

InterActual is that lousy player the Matrix and many other movie titles ship with. It smacks of spyware to me.
I just used WinDVD5 to play a DVD over the network from another computer's DVD drive. Worked pretty good. When I tried that with Leadtek's WinFastDVD, the only sound I could get was French LOL.
I haven't tried it with VideoLan yet. I hope the Lan in the name means I can.
BTW PowerDVD worked fine when I watched the Matrix Reloded on my daughter's Shuttle-XPC ( the only PC I have with a DVD at the moment )
I use videolan at work (if I cover a late/holiday/weekend shift) since we have only cdroms here and I need some way to watch mpegs/avis to keep my sanity.
This is a very nifty free software and I highly recommend it.

Thinking further, I wonder if interactual might be part of my problem.
I have been collecting DVDs for about 2-1/2 to 3 years now and everything was fin until around the time that interactual started showing up. Once I slipped up and got interactual on my system, it became the default player and after I closed it down and loaded asusDVD my movies would only play for a few minutes before freezing. If I then try to watch the same movie in interactual, it would report marcovision errors and refuse to play at all.
If I then uninstall interactual and restart my system, I could watch my movies but every time I did that, interactual would insist on reinstalling itself (stopping it from the task manager would force me to reboot). This was about the time that I started trying other players. Then my sound quality started degrading quite a bit. New sound drivers did not help (they were in fact not even to my liking compared to what came on the CD with my mobo).
That is when I decided to reformat and I have been careful not to let interactual onto my system again. Everything has been right as rain since then.
At this point, I have to wonder if interactual may be a way to do a stealth install of DRM on existing machines. If it dinked with some of the windows dll's that would account for why it would insist on being reinstalled on a system once it has been there before and also why other players just do not work after that point.
