I want to unlock my CPU and just wanted to know if using a .7 lead #2 pencil was ok. You know...those generic mechanical ones...
Thanks in advance...

It should be fine
but I suggest a conductive pen, hence the fact that pencils dont last to long (sometimes)
I use a #2 0.5 mm lead mechanical pencil and it works great.

The Sandord Eagle #2 HB should work good for a pencil. I picked up 48 of them for 3$. Shouldnt be hard to find.

I've been unlocking a couple of chips using pencils and they are all OK. If its too hot, the lead of the pencil might go off so make sure the chip aint HOT :)
I used just a standard #2 pencil but a .5 mm mechanical pencil would have probably been easier. It is the same kind of lead just thinner so it should conduct the same, but be easier to apply then a standard #2 pencil. However I still recommend using a deffogger kit instead.

What kind of INK pens would work?
I mean what common type of pens we see use conductive ink?
Bic? =)
I used the" rear window defogger repair kit" you can get it at most auto shops like NAPA,only around 7$.Get a magnifying glass and a toothpick or needle and connect the L1's. it's permenant like the pen but ez to get and cheaper. good luck

Openfriday,
Why did you get the sanford pencils?? They are suppose to be the worst. I think i'm gonna try using one of my 6B art pencils. It has a ton of graphite.

I used my mechanical Cross pen that I got for grad 10 years ago (yikes!) and it has a thicker point in it which does make it a bit more difficult to apply, but the lead in there is far better than any of the other standard #2 Mechanical or wood pencils I have ever used. The 700 Duron that I just gave to my brother still has it's original applique' using this pencil after 7 months and not a problem at all. Try to use the best lead you can unless you plan to reapply it. I had this problem since I forgot to use my Cross pen on my Athlon when I installed it and after 2 months I lost the ability to change multipliers. When I reapplied my Artic Silver and put on a non conductive CPU shim I redid the lead with my Cross pencil and I doubt I will have to work about it for a long time.

Hmmm well it appears that the pencil I used doesn't work...
When cleaning a CPU with alchohal which parts of the cpu is it not good to get alchohal near? Are there any?

the pencil will work fine as long as you fully cover both sides of each pin. you should cover it with a lot of graphite, it worked fine for me. Also make sure that the graphite isn't touching the graphite from any of the pins next to it.

Well, maybe this a good idea; The lead goes off when the chip becomes too hot is a nice safety mechanism. That way, You don't have to use the chip like a key chain :-) :-) :-)
