View Full Version : Frequent Freezing

I have just recently formatted and installed a new hard drive. Everything has been goin fine, but now my computer has been freezing a ton lately. Every time I leave for somewhere and come back it's frozen for the past 5 days.
I'd say it had to do with my proc, but it's idling therefore not overheating at all. My proc idles at 52 C, and I know that's a little hot, but that's not an issue here (or is it?)
Maybe it's something with my software... is there any diagnostic prog that could maybe tell me why it's freezing up?

Thanks tons for any help, this is really annoying.

If that temp is at stock settings then I don't think heat is an issue. Were you experiencing any of these symptoms before the reformat? Its a definate possibility that its software related. What operating system are you running? First thing to check should be the event log (control panel->administrative tools->event viewer). Check the system and application logs for errors.

One thing that has caused me nasty issues in the past is power saving features. Make sure you don't have any power saving features turned on that power down your HD.

I was not experiencing these freeze-ups before the reformat. I am running on Windows XP Pro SP1. There are a couple errors in the event log, but they were from this morning, and there have been many freeze-ups since then, so I do not know if it's related or not. One such error mentions "HRESULT 8007043C"

Under Screensaver properties, under power, everything is set to Never and Hibernation is off.

It sounds like a driver issue, list your specs including cards, mobo, ram, psu. Without knowing if you have a creative sound card make sure it is in the bottom pci slot and uninstall and reinstall just the drivers. I had the same problem with mine and it kept calling for the kmixer and was eating up the memory causing various problems.

proc idles at 52 C ???

you need a better cooling or check your cooling dude. I'm not suprised to why your computer locked

my P4 overclocked working all the time is still 43 C

If your machine is not oced 52c is fine for idle. Of the AMD retail heatsinks I have used you typically get 65c or higher load temps which is still well within safe temps for an amd proc. Are you running stock speed and using the retail heatsink fan?

Stock speed with retail heat sink. I even bought some Antec Silver Compound to get the temp down a few months ago, but it didn't even change much.

My mobo is an Abit KT7A-RAID
512 MB SD-RAM with a 265+128
PSU is Premier 300 watt
SB Audigy Gamer
GF3 Ti200

I just realized I did upgrade my Creative drivers, and I think that that was before the frequent lock ups started happening...

Write down the error exactly as it appears in the Event Viewer log, and post it in this thread...something similar to the following:

Event System Event ID: 4609

The COM+ Event System detected a bad return code during
its internal processing. HRESULT was 8007043c from line 44
of d:\nt\com\com1x\src\events\tier1\eventsystemobj.cp p
Please contact MS product services to report this error. :)

That's the exact error. I'm not sure if it has anything to do with the freezing though, because my computer has frozen up many times after that error happened. I haven't had that error for 3 days, although I have had freezes since then.

I did get AdAware and it found tons of stuff (mostly cookies, but some Gator and other things) and the freezing might have lessened... maybe just by coincidence though.

Thanks for all the help everyone.
