I just upgraded my CPU from a Celeron 2.0 to a P4 2.8 w/ 800MHz FSB. When the Celeron was in place, I had Overcloocked it to 2.6GHz. It ran warm at 106F, but performed just great. Unoverclocked, the new CPU is AWESOME, but you know what I have to do...
So the question is this:
A Fan and heatsink were enough to cool a Celeron 30% OC. (2.0->2.6) But now I want to make sure that a 2.8->3.64 OC is adequately cooled, and I think that the Fan and Heatsink will PROBABLY NOT be sufficient. However, being new to the OC scene, I thought I would ask what would be the best solution.
I'd say that as you've already spent that much money on a great processor, why not spend a little more for a good heatsink for it?
depends on your budget and aim, but some possibilities are:
Thermalright SLK947U or SP94 with Tornado 92mm and Rheostat
Zalman CNPS7000A-Cu

Well, I don't mind spending a couple hundred bucks on this, but is a heatsink and fan really all I need? That would certaintly be safer and cheaper than I had anticipated, as I had been looking at Corsair's Water Cooling unit...

Well, if you want to water cool, definatly build your own water cooling system.
You IMO don't gain much in terms of overclocking out of watercooling, just quiet.
if you want to spend a couple hundred dollars by all means go to the water cooling section and build yourself a killer water cooling setup. but you really only need the SP94 and a 92mm tornado or some high cfm fan and be perfectly fine. i wouldn't get a kit unless you really don't want to build your own water cooling system.

well either get an awesome air setup or go phase change, (or perltiers but i myself dont like them, too messy) you can geta vapochill brand new for 499 and aircool the rest of the system.
yeah... the best solution is of course phase change... but if you do decide to go that route, just read up on it, and get something like a bare Prometeia Mach 1, which is around $550, and cools quite a bit better than the Vapochill, and has a better mounting system.
water's a nice place to start too... it all depends on how much money and time you want to spend.

My 2.4 runs @ 3.1 (258mhz) @ 27c idle and 34c load with a zalman and a cheap tiger 1 nb cooler. the zalman is a very good air cooling solution.
thats it.....thats all you have no tec or anything else? which zalman do you have? my load is a little more and I have a tec but my Idle is around 10*c.

if you mean tha CNPS7000-Cu, then that's quite an amazing temperature.
how cold are your ambient temps?

I'm a newbe that try's todo good reasearch before building a new system and i cannot believe what good luck I've had with this new system. I am writing this post @ 259mhz 1:1 with my corsair DDR Memory@2.5 445 settings where everthing "feels right" in my system. I have had it upto 290 mhz 5/4 memory timings, my herk 9800 pro set @459/366 and everything is beautiful because my plan seems to have worked! As far as the temps go I spent 3-4 hours lapping the processor and the heatsink witch I think contributed to my perception of success! I really think the Zalmam 7000-cu is a really good air cooling solution!
