I just purchased a new 1.4GHz AMD thunderbird and I looked at it before I installed it. It seemed that it came with the L1 bridges already crossed, but I cannot change the multiplier setting in my BIOS, just my FSB. I noticed that the bottom dot on the third set looked a little worn off, should I use a pencil to go over the bridges and refill the dot or has this chip just been deactivated for multiplier setting?

they cannot be deactivated except by not having the bridges connected , if they look closed then they are , what you need to do is look in your motherboard manual and see if their is a jumper or special setting to allow clock multiplier changes , and welcome to the forums

Hmm...my motherboard is this one...A7A266 (http://www.asus.com/products/Motherboard/socketa/a7a266/index.html)

I tried setting it to jumper mode and manually setting it to 12.0 and >12.5, but it just stayed at 10.5 despite my effort. Any idea what's goin on?

Look closer at the bridges. I'll bet that they've been severed w/ a laser. Just pencil them in really well with a mechanical pencil and try changing your setting again.

As far as I was aware all the 1.4gig tbirds came unlocked, but I think I remember hearing of people having problems changing the multiplier. Maybe they are cut - I'd assume they are if you can't change the multiplier. Just try the pencil trick I guess.

Remeber, if it was locked with a laser, the cuts across the bridges could be tiny beyond belief. Are you looking hard enough? Photons don't make big holes. ;)

Actually, I found out that the multiplier change seems to only be doable on the board itself, not in the BIOS. But I got it at 12.0 =). The >12.5 setting doesnt seem to change anything...12.0 is as high as it will go for me.
