Recently I bought a 1.2ghz axia t-bird and took it to fry's to have them install it. (my first comp.) after having the system for about 3 months and not being able to oc' it at all I finally worked up the courage to take the heatsink off of my t-bird. (last time I did that I killed a 1ghz t-bird) but to my suprize the heatsink popped off quite easily and with no damage to the cpu. I noticed the clip mechanism was turned the wrong way on my pal6035, so I turned it around, and mounted a copper shim on my cpu. I then replaced it back in the mobo, and booted it up.

I immediately tried for 1.33ghz (something my t-bird never did before.) much to my suprize it booted up! without a hitch, I then tried the demo timedemo 001 q3 demo. Still didnt crash!! I checked the temps and they were a cool 35 C!! I then decided i would try to run seti@home. which before even without oc'ing it. my proc couldnt do. Right now I have seti@home running on my system at 44c! I am so happy!!

that just goes to show what a little re-mount can do for you!!

Re-mount it again but put some heatsink compound on and get rid of the shim. I've never used one but I hear they can prevent proper contact between the heatsink and the CPU. Also, if you are using a cheap heatsink, invest in a better one like the Glaciator and your temps will go down and your top speed will go up :)

I remounted my Alpha 6035 on my Duron 800 following the instructions from Arctic Silver (great stuff), and lowered my temps about 4 degrees Celsius. The first time I mounted it, I just put some on my finger, rubbed it on the die, and put on the HSF. Bad idea. I now follow instructions.

Could you summarize the Artic Silver instructions?

Some Artic Silver was included with my Glaciator but no instructions on how to apply it. I just put a tiny amount on with my finger and then tried to thin it out as best I could using a razor or credit card edge.

Well, instead of me summarizing it, I will send you to www.arcticsilver.com (http://www.arcticsilver.com) and you can get some detailed instructions on how to install it correctly.

Thanks for the URL. That is some seriously detailed instructions :)

Actually I am using an Alpha pal-6035 so I'm sure i got a pretty good heatsink. but that was the whole point point. if youve got a good heatsink but its mounted wrong it will suck. And I did read a review of my copper shim and it actually did Decrease the temps most likely that was because it kept the heatsink from being crooked, as well as keepint it in contact with 100% of the processor core.
