I am at college and my network is great for downloading but horrible for games so i am planning to get high speed high end DSL and share it with a bunch of ppl over a wireless network but i have many things to tackle before doing this such as worrying about usage logging incase the RIAA gets on my ass for someone else downloading illegal music.

So here are my q's:

1- Is there any way to distribute bandwidth equally between lets say 5 people on a wireless/wired network so that if one person is downloading it wont lag the others? Share bandwidth equally?

2- Is there a way to log all usage including downloads, websites visited, game servers logged on, etc?

Can i do the above using hardaware routers?

you should implement a proxy server to take care of the second question. not sure if it will help with #1, I dont think so. There were a couple threads on this recently, search for proxy servers o here you should find one thats got a recommendation for a good freeware prog

If the college net is good for downloading, it should be good for games. Unless they know of the gaming, and are locking down the ports. Harware routers do allow you to meter bandwith on differnt ports, and different IPs. I highly doubt that any of those routers are in you price range. I also don't feel that you are going to be sastified with a DSL connection for a lot of people.

When you say downloads are fast, where are you downloading from?

Also are all games slow, or just specific ones?

Are you in a dorm on campus?

i am off campus but we recieve the internet through the school, and i can download at insanespeeds but gaming pings SUCK and very laggy....

So im getting DSL, so theres no way i can limit the bandwidth each person gets? even if its not a "shared limit"?

eg: each person can only download at 100kbps max?

The squid-proxy server looks like it can do most of what you are asking.
