I lost one of my Raptos the other day. I was reformating and I kept getting a missing windows file and on boot one of the drives had the "error" display after it on the Raid boot screen....so I rma'ed it but the replacement won't be here for a couple weeks. I was able to reformat just using a single raptor on the bios selection of "combined" mode because I wanted to be able to use the 120gig pata backup drive. I have no access to my backup drive it doesn't register on the directory. I have tried all of the IDE/PATA/SATA (except for 'enhanced' but that is with an array which I am unable to do right now)combonations and still cannot access the pata drive.

Anyways....I have heard about the new way to create a Raid array that Intel or windows has incorporated into the ICH5. My understanding of it is limited but I think you can just add a matching drive to an existing one and create a raid array while you are in windows via a raid gui. Does anyone have any info or experience with this? I would like to try it out when my replacement hdd comes.

Thanks fellas, krag

Are you asking about software raid? That has been in Windows for ages, has nothing to do with ICH5.

Maybe I don't really know what I'm asking. I thought there was a way to just add a drive to an existing drive and make some selections via a gui to turn it into a raid arry without a reformat.

You have to go into Administrative tools and use Disk Management. I don't recommend software raid because well...it's software dependent. Your OS dies and you loose your data.

Besides that if OS dies and you loose data if not mistaken its harder to set up then a hardware raid. Besides hardware raid is much faster and more reliable (not CPU dependent).

My software raids work fine between different os installs.

You lose the controller and your hardware raid is hard to use.
