View Full Version : is 40 celcius hot to the touch?
ive just lapped my thermalright sk6 and apllied the arctic silver, the temperature in the bios rose to 40 celcius in about 15 minutes,i touched the heatsink and it was barely warm,i thought 40c would feel hotter than this.
Is my iwill mobo lying to me or what?
i have a 1ghz axia on an iwill kk266r with latest bios,
any help would be much appreciated.

I doubt the heatsink is 40C when the thermistor says 40C for CPU, but even though the inaccuracy of the in-socket thermistors, the heatsink shouldn't be 40C.
I was running Alpha PEP66T at CPU temps of 56C and the heatsink was a bit warm, not much more warmer than the human average temp of 37C.
Now I'm using watercooling and the waterblock is about the same temp as me.
The best thing to do, I think, is to remove the CPU and bend the thermistor upwards a bit, so that it touches the bottom of the CPU. This can be verified by applying some AS to the thermistor and making sure that it leaves a small "stain" of AS to the bottom of the CPU.
Atleast this makes sure you get as accurate temps as possible.
To answer the original question, 40C is a bit warm to the touch. Not much, barely noticeable.
I hope this helps.
thanks for the help,i forgot the sensor was in the socket.

Just wondering, are you overclocking your chip? 40 degree C is great temp, is it idel temp or under full load? I gotta get me one of those HSF, if it is under full load/overclocked!
the chips running standard 1.75 voltage @ 1000mhz,axia y
it runs 40c in the bios then lowers to 33/34 at idle in windows with wccredit tweak, at load it hits a max of 44c.
before i lapped it with just simple smoothish sandpaper it hit 48c max load but i was using a non conductive shim before and forgot to fit it this time so that could of lowered it along with the artctic silver.
this is all with 3 fans in the case,60mm on the sk6,1 80mm case intake and a 60mm intake.running at 1330 it reached 55 under load.
hope this helps
hehe, my Duron 850 is 55°C hot, but I donīt know whats right, what the BIOS says or what Asus Probe says, because, even under full load and then a reboot the CPU Temp in Bios is 6° lower than in Asus Probe, so,Iīve got with a Duron 750@850 at default Core Voltage with a slightly bigger cooler from the CeBit something between 46-55°, so your 44 are good =)
It should be a little warm when the proc is at 40', but the heatsink may be a few degrees cooler, if you were touching the core while it was 40 degrees it will be hot to the touch. i have had mine at 50' and the heatsink was really warm but not hot, and thatwas after runnig prime95 for 7 hours.

Human body temp. is ~37C (hope I got this one right :) ) so 40C would just be slightly warmer than your body.
