View Full Version : HP computer problem
I have a friend's computer that isn't working. She ask me to take a look at it, so I brought it home and turned it on. The power turns on, but nothing on the screen. It doesn't even post, no beeps or anything, just a black screen. And when you try to turn it off, that doesn't work either. The only way to turn it off is to pull the plug. The led for the hdd never turns on. So I thought maby it was the hdd, so I tried a different one. Still the same. It's a HP XT963, it's not very old. So the next thing I thought of was the psu. But dam.......this psu in it is like, small. I don't even think it's an ATX psu. I've got a few extra genaric psu's laying around, like a "350w" psu, I'm wondering if it would hurt anything if I tried it. It's been a while since I've really looked at any of the "store bought" computers. Anyone have any ideas or sugestions?
As long as the plugs are the same it will probably work.
That's kind of what I was thinkin. But this d** hp is the pits, I mean it really sux! I guess that's why I got into building computers myself in the first place. I think I'll give the psu a try. Thanks for the reply.

do you hear any BEEP at all ???
why don't you connect this HP to your current working monitor and turn it on???
if you don't see anything show up in your working monitor, there is something with HP
perhaps, it is video / mobo problem
but if you have another free video card, you can put it in HP and see what happen
if it is nothing happen, try to take out the memory.............it should beep crazy at this point..........if NO, replacing mobo or return this HP to HP for repair
do you see the fan of power supply spinning ??? if NO, power supply is death.......if YES, see above sentences
there are things you need to look into to know what causes problem
do you hear any BEEP at all ???
No. That's what I said in the original post.

I did, that's why I said " nothing on the screen."

Read the post & you should know the answer to that.

I know that! I was just asking for some help. I explained the problem as best I can, if you don't know anything to help, that's ok. But don't treat me like I'm an idiot.

Before you try another psu check the voltages if you have a meter or at least check the current psu tag on the side should tell you what votages are going to what wires. I don't think it should be a problem but that's the easy way to check. the other thing would be to pull all the add on cards and see if it beeps. I had a sound card go bad and gave me the same symptoms. The thing that leads to a bad card would be that it doesn't shut off.
Well, I looked at the psu & there's not anything to really identify it, like most other psu's I've seen. It doesn't have the reg stickers/id's that most other psu's have. I think this is just an "inhouse" or generic psu.
Unfourtunatly this thing has no cards, everything is on the mobo. I think I'll go ahead & try another psu that I have. But I'm starting to think it may be the mobo. If so, with what this computer has in it, I think it may be time to consider upgrading to a new computer. Thanks for your help. :)
