View Full Version : Anyone with A64, I need your input
I just got my A64 today along with the MSI board and everything went great. I loaded windows up and I noticed a difference. Anyways, I go to run 3dmark and it crashes at the lobby.
I checked my temps and they were at 70 C!!!! but at 1.4 vcore... what the heck is going on i know its the cool and quiet technology and I have an AP chip but I can barely get anything running without crashing or freezing up. What are your temps with your chip? Suggestions?
check the seating of your HSF?
which cooler are you using actually?
do you also have good case airflow?
im usin the thermaltake silent boost, i just reseated the hs and still gettin 67ish. One of the hinges doesnt look like its on all the way but it seems to be seated nice and tightly. The whole heatsink was hot when I took it off and the processor wasnt burning hot when i touched it.
I have 2 front intakes, 1 side intake and 2 back exhaust and all my wires are sleeved so Im hoping the airflow is good :D
u know a64 requires 75 pounds of pressure on the cpu, the normal socket supplys 35 pounds.
eh..... how am I suppose to get that extra 40 pounds of pressure then?
Sidenote: I dont like the hs fan as it has no grill to protect wires from and I get nervous with it :P
hmmm.... not sure how good a cooler that is.
it might just be that that's how much it's gonna cool.
I remember its fan only turns around at around 2400rpm, and pushes only around 20 cfm...
have you tried another fan?
your heatsink is hot, so it's making good enough contact. I've never heard of the contact pressure thing, but it's possible.
as your heatsink is hot, it's just not dissipating the heat quickly enough, so I'd suggest trying with a better fan.
hm.. i have no other fan to test it with... are there any other heatsinks that are better equipped than the thermaltake? I know theres a list on AMD site so Im gonna go investigate :o
hmmm... if you are after a very quiet heatsink which cools very well, the Zalman CNPS7000A-Cu cools very well.
it works for your CPU, but not sure about whether it fits on your motherboard.
i wasnt really looking for a silent hsf persay.... I was hoping this was going to be silent and have good performance :D Guess not. It was also brought to my attention by another guy on AMD forums that my HS didnt have TIM when I opened it up so something must have happened there. I wish some of the local stores carried 754 hsf as now I will probably have to wait a week for an RMA :'(
no TIM?!!!
if you don't have to have quiet, then your choice will probably widen. not sure how many socket 754 coolers there are though.
first get some TIM, then get something like a Smartfan 2 for your Silentboost, as it looks like it should have a pretty decent heatsink.
it's probably just the fan which is too weak.
(offtopic: Yasmine Bleeth fan I guess?)
haha... no its tiffany thiesen :P
back on topic for the time being ..... hmm hopefully have some as3 somewhere and hmmm smartfan 2.... i have a good few of those laying around somewhere :D
*edit*
maybe I will also lap it tomorrow if I find some time.... hope wally world has some sandpaper in stock
(crap! wrong chick. oh well. I should look at more pics... concentrating too hard on Laetitia Casta...)
as for TIM, you could try online vendors, or your local computer store.
it doesn't matter if they don't have Arctic products, even generic white goop is better than nothing.
and if you really can't find anything... maybe you could try something oily, like solid grease, you might try that for the time being, until you get your TIM.
when i first read that the heatsink came with no tim, i thought "hmm, the heatsink didnt have a thermal pad, so what", but it seems you are not using ANY tim? ie as3, thermal pad etc? no wonder your temps are so high. metal to metal contact is no good
from every review i've read and a friend of mine has one as well. the silent boost is pretty awesome. his temps rival mine with same clock speeds and voltages. he has same week xp2500 and nf7-s with same bios.
i'm sure lack of tim is your only problem. also, i'm betting your temps are reading right from cpu diode which would inflate them 10-15c for sure.
very surprised your silent boost didn't come with any tim as every thermaltake hsf i've ever bought (at least 5) plus 2 ppl with silent boosts i know have come with it.

tim stands for what?....I know you are talkin about thermal greese etc.. but whats it stand for?....thermal inductive meatballs?....I dunno lol :D
thermal interface material.
HOLY JESUS!
i finally found my as3 and put some on this morning and spread it all out. The reason I didnt really want to put it on i guess was because i didnt know if I should put it all over or what :P
Anyways.. the temps dropped 30C and now im gettin 42C :D Im gonna be lapping it later hopefully get 35C. I really guess it was a bad idea to have metal to metal like mage said :P
thanks guys... and this goes to show... use your TIM :P
WOW! Looks like that AS3 did you some good then :D I never expected 30C difference between TIM and no TIM temps.... That's just scary!!
Hope you have good luck with your chip! :)
