Will i have better performance in games if i upgrade my cpu from 1000mhz slot to a iwill kk266 and 1.333 chip overclocked to 1500+.
The catch is i can either pay 180 for a good video card or stick with my voodoo 3 and buy a new 1.333 chip with good stepping. My question is do you think i will get more fps for my money in the long run upgrading to a good cpu instead of a video card running on a slot a system at 2x agp and pc100 ram. Right now im getting good fps in unreal t at 32bit 1024*768 is 75fps averege. Now this is with my friends geforce 2 pro 64ddr overclocked to 242/440. When i get my new cpu i would be reverting back to my voodoo 3 but i did pull out really good fps with that card so i dont think it will matter.
What do you think? Buy a good video card, or upgrade my cpu and overclock it to 1400-1500mhz from 1000 mhz slot a and just wait down the road and get a nice ultra or geforce 3 a few months later with my 1.333 chip

Do yourself a favor and buy a video card as 1ghz is more than enough processor power for todays games. You wont see much of an improvement. While a new video card.. especialy since you have a voodoo3 will improve your framerate big time and make things look better giving your a computer a nice overall feel. I also got lower pings with when i got my card. Since you were looking to spend about $200 check ebay or pricewatch and get a good 64mb geforce2.
Goodluck,

i noticed that too as well with ping rates and a good video card. But you will also get good ping rates with a faster cpu. I can spend 250 bucks and get 1500mhz easy which would give me a 50 percent increase in speed. Let me remind you that im running one of the first slot a motherboards which only runs on pc100 ram and 2x agp. I already have the cas 2 crucial ram which will do an easy 146 Fsb at cas 2 if i get the iwill kk266.
Id like to hear a few more opinions before i buy a 200 dollar video card , im seriouly considering a voodoo 5500 for 100bucks than going for a geforce 2 pro 64 ddr card.

yeah get a voodoo 5 if you can. depends on the games you play and the best money would be not spending anything and tweaking that voodoo3 if you haven't already check out www.vooodoosource.net. they have detailed files!

I already overclocked it to 197mhz from 166 and flashd the bios with a performance bios that was hacked. Do you think i should really go for a180 dollar geforce 2 pro card or a voodoo 5500 . wouldnt i get a better increase in performance with the iwill kk266 and 1.333 overclocked with crucial ram for 260 bucks?????? Mekka boy is telling me to get a ultra or geforce 2 pro and just keep my old slot a motherboard 1000mhz tbird slot a that runs pc100 ram

Personally I would dump that Voodoo3 get a GeForce 2MX 32MB card that's affordable and overclock it. I overclocked mine to 200/200 and according to 3DMark2001's comparison lists I am only performing slower than a stock GF3, GF2 Pro and Radeon DDR. If not consider a KryoII or a Radeon VE card and overclock them a bit. Then, upgrade your motherboard to something that supports 133MHz bus speeds and faster AGP and run with that, see if you can't overclock a bit more (or differently). That would probalby be the best overall expendature of your cash. Don't bother with 3Dfx products unless you get them VERY cheap, and your CPU should be fine.

If you are already getting 75fps on games like UT, getting a faster mb and chip will not help you. I'm talking from experience.

I have a Voodoo 3 in my machine right now. My system is brand new. A 1.33ghz overclocked to 1.52ghz along with 256mb of PC2100 ram and a 7200 rpm ata100 WD hard drive. My Voodoo 3 is a little slower than yours, it's a V3 2000 pci version at 143mhz, but I don't think it makes much of a difference. On Quake 3 (which is not too different from UT), I am getting 69fps at best. My system is fast as hell, the only bottleneck that I have is the Voodoo3.

So, my advice is get the video card upgrade if you really want to improve your gaming performance. I advise you NOT to buy a Voodoo 5 unless you are absolutely sure that you can return it if it doesn't work. I bought a V5 for $99 and thought it was a bargain. Guess what, it doesn't work. It's defective and I can't get my money back. I called 3dfx for support. They have 2 people left. They told me I am stuck because they have no more inventory.

That's my 2 cents.

mad_capr I am sorry to hear about the bad card! I have two voodoo5 and they are very nice and cheap it is true if you have a problem you are SOL. I would wait for the G3's to drop or get a v5 if you need more speed.

Get a new video card. Check out the Leadtek Geforce2 Ultra at newegg.com for $242 with free shipping. I have one and I can tell you its REALLY FAST. With 4ns onboard you can overclock the DDR memory from default 460 Mhz to 500 easily and probably to around 530 Mhz like me. That will give you another 20-25% boost in frame rate in games like Q3. Right now I can run Q3 at 1280x1024 in 32 bit color with max everything at 84 fps in DEMO1. Even at 1600x1200 I still get 60 fps.

If you want to spend less check out the Geforce2 Pro 32MB for $132. You can save $38 by getting the 32MB instead of the 64MB version which is $170. I don't think the extra 32MB gains you much right now. But keep in mind that the Pro with only 5.5ns DDR RAM will be a fair amount slower than the Ultra. But either will be much faster than a V3.
