Today I got a squid server running on my Suse 8.2 box. It's a P2-450 w/192mb of ram that I use as a sandbox. I wanted to see if I could utilize squid's caching to boost surfing performance. It is bascially set up with all the defaults with the exception of having it listen on port 8080. After some putzing I was able to get it to work. I tried it with IE 6 (the bloat of all browsers, I normally use Firebird) after clearing all history etc and pointing to my proxy. I tried a few different sites in that configuration and it seemed ok. I then cleared history and proxy settings and went to the same sites as before. I did notice that they loaded a bit slower.
I'm sure there are some squid settings that can be fine tuned, but I'm not sure where to start. I used Webmin to configure the basic settings.
Any advice would be appreciated.
