View Full Version : SilverStone Tech 400W
i was getting ready to upgrade my PS and was going to get a 350w pc power and cooling turbocool ($66) then i looked on newegg for some other stuff and came across this thing (http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproduct.asp?DEPA=1&submit=Go&description=SST%2DST40F).
i have searched the forums and only a few topics exist about it. there are several reviews around the web that give it good reviews (except for the lack of connectors and short wire lengths, i can live with that). i really like its looks and the big quiet fan but i want the best PS for the money. im sure the PCP&C would be the best one but im worried about the lower wattage (im having power troubles) not being able to power my future upgrades (ram, vid, mb/cpu) without having to go and get a larger source.
anyway i want to get something really decent for under $70 with pfc. i was also looking at the fortron/sparkle 400 watters (FSP400-60PFN etc...) i would prefer to have one with a 120mm fan. i guess im needing a little more guidance than i have been able to find from my searches. mostly i want to find out about the silverstone.
thanks,

The Silverstones are made by Sirtec, who also makes units for Highpower and Thermaltake. Not too bad usually, but the 350 Fortron 120mm unit at Newegg would be a little more powerful.

Probably not terrible but for the price you could buy a non PFC PSU with more muscle (and probably higher quality as well).
i kind of want something cool looking hehe. the fortron FSP350-60PN "Aurora" is cool but has no pfc. would i really need pfc anyway? i wish there was a 400w version with a 120mm fan. i didnt see one on the fortron website but the Aurora wasnt there either.

most people don't need pfc...i believe this is necessary for "unstable" AC power from older AC lines...i had read a little on this before...anyway you can do some searches and see
also the fortron 350 120mm fan kind of is a 400 watt supply...350 watt fortrons have been tested at 450+ watts at tomshardware guide
if you want more power for $70-75 then get the fortron 530 or the sparkle 460-550 (i believe some if not all of the sparkle's have pfc)
thanks. i think ill be safe. my current PS is so cheap but still works decent (cept when gaming). its a 300w but it seems like its rated at 200w hehe. im still torn between the PCP&C 350w and the fortron 350w. the big fan (and blue led's) are kind of winning me over for fortron. after reading all the happy users comments im sure it will be a great choice. some sites say the fortron has pfc standard (i think uk versions) and some say its an option. i should just buy the damn thing and quit all my whining hehe.

You may find it interesting to know that PC P&C has used Fortron units in the past as the basis for their lower wattage units.
yea, i did know they just upgade some of the guts from another manufacturer but i didnt know it was fortron. im almost positive im getting the aurora 350w. its odd though, newegg and all the other sellers have it shown with standard white molex plugs but i have also seen it here (http://www.pricewatch.com/s/b.asp?d=4225835) with cool quick release connectors and sata connectors. i never heard of this seller and they have no reseller rating but the price is $10 less han new egg.
logical plus is an excellent reseller in my opinion. I've bout several items from them including 2 benq 17" flat panel monitors. each item arrived ahead of schedule and I was completely satisfied with there service.http://www.resellerratings.com/seller2429.html
edited for link to resellar ratings.
looks like the store slipped in ratings since last time I used them.
thanks for the link! i'll have to call them and find out about the connections.

i emailed and called logicalplus and they were about as helpfull as a shoe. they said they would call me back with an answer but never did. so i didnt (and wont) give them my business! hehe
yee ha! finally got my new PS. i got the fortron 350w aurora (from dealsonic). my comp now has a killer purple/bluish glow from the back and the inside looks sick nice chrome(ish) shiny body. the pictures of this thing do it no justice. its 100 times cooler looking in person. ahhh and the best part... after a year of random lockups and freezes im finally running solid. i was able to do all the stuff that wold normally lock up my system. and the rails are all real tight. my old PS voltages were always .5 to as far as 1.20 volts off of what they were supposed to be (hence the freezes). now there all right on and dont even budge when under a load. how nice is that? i got all my cables nicely arranged (i plan to wire loom them after i get a new MB and H2o rig). i definitly recomend this PS. of course its only been running for an hour but if i have a different opinion in the future i will post it in this thread.
