View Full Version : Does Radio Shack compound harden ?
Here's the deal, I read somewhere where a guy changed the thermal paste on the two heatsinks from a voodoo5. So I figured I'd give it a shot...get this,
the factory didn't even cover the whole core of both processors with they're gunk And on one of the core's thermal paste had a freakin' peace of foil in it about the size of a , hmm I don't know, the head of a std. screw. Anyway , I put some Radio Shack compound on them but it doesn't seem to want to set or harden.
I ran 3DMark 2001 for about four hours and I can still move the little fans. Is this stuff suppose to harden or what???
Cuz this is the same stuff i have on the cpu core.
It is supposed to remain viscous. I will eventually dry out and need to be replaced. Outside of the superior thermal properties, this is one of the advantages of Arctic Silver. It does not dry out.
You need to get Thermal Adhesive to mount the heatsinks back on there unless you use some other method to fasten the heatsinks to the GPU's. Regular thermal paste doesn't harden, so it will be gooey for a long time.

ithought u need the artic silver thermal epoxy stuff to stick the video card heat sink back on unless it has those little tabs that holds the heatsink in place

The stuff voodoo used on thier card was more of an epoxy then a paste. I would throw a couple of blue orbs
on it they come with paste and mounting pins that align with the 5500's holes.
Are you still putting back on the stock fans?
I dont think it was worth the trouble if you are.
Artic silver is the way to go.
or artic silver epoxy if you dont have any easy means to mount.
YOULL BE WAITING A WHILE BECAUSE THE RADIO SHACK PASTE WONT HARDEN!!!!!!!!

What I have heard of, but never done, is putting thermal compound in the middle and a tiny drop of super glue on each corner of the heat sink. This will let you stick the sink on, but you can pry it off if you need to. Again, it sounds good to me, but I have never done it.

Well that really SUX, I went through all that trouble for nothing. The problem is that the card is upside down in my tower and i'm afraid the heatsinks will fall off while i'm not aware. Maybee i'll try that super glue idea or get some AS 2. Will the AS2 set and hold the heatsink and fans???
And yes i'm putting the same fans back on...
Arctic Silver II is a thermal grease. What you want is Arctic Silver Epoxy. Go here (http://www.arcticsilver.com) read and learn.
