hello. i just oced my duron 800 on my asus a7a266 board by increasing the vcore to 1.625 and increasing the cpu to 111. my cpu temp rose to 50c from 48c. that made it 896mhz, and it seems to be ok. but i want to get a new fan/heatsink.

i wanna know if ill be ok going higher, to say 122 and maybe even 1.65 on the vcore (with a new fan/heatsink of course). will it decrease the life of the chip considerably if its kept cool (like 45c or lower)?? please let me know.

oh yeah, will taking the side panel off of my tower help keep it slightly cooler??

Welcome to the forum
I run my Duron 800 @ 1050 ( 7.5 x 140 ) with a Global Win FOP 32 hsf ( Y-Tech fan not the noisy delta ) and have no problems at all with stability.. I generally have a CPU temprature of around 45 c on load and would not start to be concerned untill getting over 50 c. Overclocking reduces the life expentancy of the CPU however it will be out of date long before any effect of this is usually seen.
To see the kinds of speeds people are getting from Duron 800's check the CPU database on the front of this site.
Taking the sides of your case may improve tempratures, but running case fans may be a better solution long term

If you need anymore help please try to tell us as much as you can about your system and display tempratures in degree centigrade.

howdy again. i assume the 7.5 in your post is clock multiplier?? and does this penciling around with my chip and its L1 bridges really help to set the multiplier?? seems a little fishy (perhaps because im a skeptical person and new to overclocking for the most part). could that be why i get improper frequency settings errors when i boot with my cpu at anything above 115 and 6.50 on the vcore?? either way i don't plan on doing any heavy ocing until i get all my fans.

The Level 1 Bridge takes a small amount of current across them, so when joining these with any material that conducts electricity it work. A pencil contains lead which is capable of doing this task however most people use a kit for repairing the heated rear window element on a motor vehicle ( a defogger repair kit ) for a permanent fix as this does nor rub of unlike pencil.. The details on how to do this can be found Here (http://www.overclockers.com/tips402/)

You are correct in that the 7.5 refers to my multiplier and the 140 is my front side bus.. To obtain these speeds the Level 1 bridges which control the multiplier have to be unlocked and some people need to unlock the Level 7 bridges which control the voltage of the CPU, however the Abit KT7A-Raid that I use allow me to change the voltage in the bios settings
The Duron pushes out quite a lot of heat and as such a good hsf must be used, a standard fan or ORB is most certainly not advisable for use.
When you up the voltage of a Duron you should take into consideration the power supply and use at least a 300 w
A system will only perform as well as its weakest component and quite possibly your "lame-o 8mb sis video card" may hold your system back

hmm, i unlocked my L1 bridges using a pencil like it said in that article, and it would not allow me to change my clock multiplier. i tried unlocking the L7 after that, even though i can change it in my bios too, but that didn't help either. i took the chip out, and made the pencil marks even harder, and that didn't help. did i do something wrong or what?? i can't quite figure it out.

could it be because the pencil marks were connected (although they didnt look connected)??

the amount of graphite in a pencil can determine its electricla conductivity (i think)
so the softer a pencil the more likely you will get a good connection
i tried every pencil in my house and couldnt get it to work
then i got mad and bought the defogger kit the unseenmenace was talking about
after a little drying time, my multiplier changed at will
i highly recommend the defogger kit because its permanent, sometimes the pencil will wear out
theres an article in the beginner guides on how to apply the defogger paint, i think UnseenMenace linked to it in his post
very good method, worked for me perfectly
good luck with your oc!

The defogger repair kit can also be known as a window de-mister kit and can be obtained from most motor vehicle part suppliers.
