View Full Version : 54C 2500+ @ idle?

Just purchased a Giga-Byte 7N400 Pro2 mb and a AMD 2500+ CPU. Idle temps are 54C reported in BIOS. No OS installed yet.
Don't this seem a little high? I'm using a CoolerMaster HHC-001 heatsink and fan. When I take the HSF off, the HSF and the CPU are cool to the touch.
Any ideas?
if you are sure that you have good contact between the CPU and HSF, it might be possible that it's just a faulty reporting of the temperature.

Which is fairly common on the newer Gigabyte boards. I've finally got mine to show proper temps (it was showing up to 60C at idle, where it shows 34-35@ idle, 42 under load).

I've taken the HSF off many times and the impression in the Artic Silver indicates it's making good contact. I even put the stock AMD HSF on the the temp reading was 56C idle.
I was thinking the same thing, the temps are off in the BIOS.
In addition, when I go to load the OS, it starts the loading process fine and then slows to absolute crawl after the first reboot. I 've not been able to even get past the boot screen. :(

What did you do to get it to show the proper temps?

Unfortunately, only the older BIOS versions on the board report proper temps, so knowing where they are now gives me a baseline to subtract from when I see that the BIOS now is 20C higher. It's sad that the later BIOS versions have this problem, though :( (The version that I had that showed the proper temps was F6)

That coolermaster hcc-001 is a terrible heatsink! I used to have one on my old render slave system, and it would have terrible temps with all cpus I put in there. Until I lapped the base that is. Then it got decent temperatures after I got all the imperfectures out of it. If you don't know how to lap a heatsink, there should be a sticky in the cooling sticky forums. Have fun.

My idle 2500+ temps (before overclocking) were around 32C, load was about 36C. Try getting a better heatsink, I'm using the slk-800a and a TT smartfan II, even when I overclock to 3200+ speeds I'm still around 40C .

Your experiences with the Coolermaster were poor. Mine were not. The only reason I swapped mine out was because I wanted a 20dB fan on my CPU, rather than a 50+ one.

It seems to me that the temp depend on room temp and inside case temps. I had a problem like this but I didnt put the HSF on right. Operator error :) Luck for me my office is at the far end of the house which is the coldest room. Im getting 20C ot 25C idles at 65F
Good luck

Results:
Fixed the loading OS problem. The Keyboard was bad and was causing the OS to freak out when loading for the first time.
The AMD 1800 (JIHXB) was only able to do 1.8GHz @ 166 FSB. Changing the voltages didn't help :(
The AMD 2500+ is currently running at 2.3GHz @ 210 FSB with default voltages.
I think I'll keep using the 2500. :)
