Did any of you happen to catch FOXNews Friday morning
about 07:20 EST?

They had a piece about the last flight of the Concorde.
It all went pretty well until one of the male announcers
happened to mention that "....when the Concorde gets
out over the Atlantic it can fly thirty times the speed of
light."

I knew there were some space cadets on FOX, but damn.

that announcer needs to get his head checked...

Shush, that's classified NATO data :p

That's pretty funny. Don't you love that they hire news casters these days based almost wholly on their appearance rather tan their qualifications?

NPR baby. They go deeper into a story than sound bites from the right and left. They don't dumb a story down so that it can be enjoyed by someone with the attention span of an 8 year old.

30 times the speed of light  The question is, when you get there is everyone else 80 years older, while you're still the same age? That would make everyone else REALLY jealous at the old high school reunion!

O M G!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

hehehe dumb***...................

30 times the speed of light.............

*Picard: Geordie, reroute all power to the engines, take it from life support if you have to.....

*cmdr laforge: Thats all shes got captain...

*Picard: you mean to tell me you cant keep up with a **** 80's earth aircraft!!!!?!?!?

heh. thats not even funny, but anyways, still 30 times the speed of light......................whoa................... ...LOL

Wow, sometimes I laugh so hard I almost cry. Then I think about the
dumbing down of the USA and then I really cry :(

Oh crap!!! Looks like the Americans leaked it this time.

If I remember correctly, nothing will ever travel faster than light.

at least it should be impossible to accelerate to the speed of light.

accelerating particles to near the speed of light is done quite often in those ring shaped particle acceleraters, but never to more than the speed of light.

Mass becomes infinity...

Now that is why the news agencies need to check their facts a little bit better. Last spring CNN had a card on the screen for the Columbia story that said the shuttle broke up at 18 times the speed of light. Whatever else there is to say about impossible speeds, it is simply a fact that the Concorde cannot out race the shuttle. ;P

On a more serious note, given that y=1/(sqrt (1-(v^2/c^2)) there are some troublesome infinities that come into play when v^2/c^2=1, making the math for speeds in excess of the speed of light only a random guess. However, my random guess is that you would, in fact, arrive younger than when you left. Further, I speculate that everyone else would be far younger than you when you arrive, so what they would be jealous of is the fact that you are now a senior and they have yet to start shaving!!! ;P

I thought all the present physics theories still do not allow faster than light travel... did I miss recent developments in this area?

I do remember that if someone accelerates to near the speed of light, and then comes back to earth, he won't have aged much, but all the people on earth would have aged a great deal more than the space traveler.

uhh... haven't seen that smily before... not sure what it means...

I see the file name is rotf... what does that stand for?

I know I must sound like a ****** asking, but I really don't know.

You could (theoretically) have faster-than-light travel if the object in question had complex mass though.. problem is even Antimatter has real mass :-/

I also remember reading about a faster than light spacecraft using a negative energy bubble... not sure if it was BS or something valid though.

Heck they go faster than light several times a week in Star Trek :p

Back to silly reporters: That Brit who anchors the CNN London beuro was on that flight and admitted he was going to 'nick' some souvenours. He briefly interviewed Christi Brinkley who was also on that last transatlantic flight and asked her if she had anything in her seating area he could nick but she said she had already nicked them.

And I thought I was bad for nicking some soap and shampoo from the Disneyland Hotel ten years ago

What would the North Atlantic Treaty Organization have to do with a fast flying aircraft?

Perhaps NASA could answer that question:p

You haven't seen it because it's not a normal smilie on this site - it's just a smilie picture hosted on another :)

also used as rotflmao - rolling on the floor laughing my @$$ off

Woah... imaginary mass :) That could be kinda cool :D Twice the speed of light would require you to have a mass of -3i

Those people on the concord have some really imaginary mass

A lot of them imagine themselves as having less mass than they really do :p

heh :D

If only you could get a plane that REALLY went that fast!
