View Full Version : Which Intel Chip for new Prommy Mach II?

Hi guys!

I am going to be building a new system in the next few weeks and though it might jump to Intel (as you can see from my sig, an upgrade is long overdue). I am going to order a prommy mach II to cool this new baby and was wondering which was my best option with Intel (considering mobo, ram and cpu).

I considered the following:

CPU: P 2.4c (but might change, depending on motherboard and Ram)

Motherboard: I am really unsure on this, I hear the Max3 is theoratically the best but struggles with 5:4 and high vdimm in practice. Runner up is Asus with P4C800-E, as you can see, I need some help with this one!

Ram: Though about some nice PC4000, then read about the advantages of tighter timings with GAT. Contemplated Mushkin black lvl 2 pc3500 with bh-5 chips but then came back to the vdimm problems on the Max-3. also, I do not know how high I could push this 3500 even with vdimm=3.2v so I might have to get a higher multi than on the 2.4c

So there you have my dillema! I hope you guys can give me some ideas and perspective that will make the decision easier :) !

Thanks a lot for looking and thanks in advance!

I'd have to recommend the 2.6C (13 multi) Using the 5:4 divider you could get

Cpu: 3770
fsb: 290
memory: 232 (2-2-2-11 )

check the abit boards. everyone is having problems over 270. and if the voltage is fluctuating then its a board problem. YOu would have to RMA it and wait 6 weeks. A lot of people are having problems over 2.9V and 270.

If you are using a prommy mach II, get a P4 3.0C, or a P4 3.2C.

Most people with a 3.0C and a prommy get 4GHz easily. If you get a 3.2C you might get 4.2GHz.

Whatever you do, don't get a 2.4C. It's a good chip for air and water cooling, but it would never hit 4GHz.

3.0C (15multi) = requires 266fsb
266 is too high for ANY memory at 2-2-2 1:1
266 at 5:4 .....213 memory speed

vs

2.6C (13multi) = requires 307fsb
307-too high for 1:1
307 @ 5:4 ....memory@245

You should get

a 3.0 ghz

don't worry about aggresive RAM timings, just get some pc4000 at 3-4-4-8, you shoudl be able to get some good mem scores running at 1:1

If I remember correctly, more CPU and RAM Mhz was faster than lower Mhz with tighter RAM timings.

My memory isn't always that good though! :D

thats what i thought also, although i was not sure.... if i was getting a Mach II i would prolly get a 2.8 or 3.0 and some fast ram with not so tight timings rather than slow cpu and slow ram with tight timings

Who said anything about slow cpu? the goal is usually to arrive at the highest fsb possible

slower* :) if you disagree sorry, just what *I* would do

if he is interested in spending that much i'd go with an amd64.....ask anyone who currently owns a 4gig+ p4. almost all of them are currently favoring the amd64.

but he did say p4..... yea if i had that much money i too would get the FX-51.
