HI, I have finaly decided to build my next comp. It's time to put my p3 500 to rest. Anyway I want to get a 1.4ghz t-bird.
Here are my questions:
1 - How soon will AMD rls anything higher than 1.4ghz? And is this model line nearing it's end???
2 - Whats the best mobo to go with the tbird? I'm partial to ASUS, but if ABIT will make it ALLOT easier to OC than I'l go with that.
3 - whats the "name" of the RAM for this CPU (the 266 fsb ram)?
4 - I will be building a water cooled rig for this cpu but I will not be putting in a pelt. What should I expect as my OC limit with that?

Sorry for all the total newbie question's, but I just don't have the time to reaserch, as I work long hours. He he, when I had no job I knew everything about oc'ing but had no money to do it. Now I have plenty of money but no time to re learn.

1. Amd won't be releasing anything much higher than 1.5ghz by the end of the year. Things will be slow until the .13u process is available.

2. Asus Makes great boards I would either get an Asus A7V133 or a Iwill KK266. Both are great overclockers with multiplier and fsb support.

3. The ram is just pc133 or ddr ram depending on what motherboard you chose. Both boards I mentioned use pc133. You can also use pc150 or pc166 if you want to overclock the fsb a lot. I highly recommend Tonicom PC166. I have been able to run the stuff on and A7V133 @ 164 222 timing.

4. Results very a lot but you could safely expect 1.5-1.6ghz, maybe more with water cooling but it would be tough.

1. the T-bird line is almost at it's end :(

2. I'm using the Asus A7A266 DDR MB. It's a nice board, but it has poor documentation with it....however this is the first comp iever built and it works fine (so far). one of the best parts about this board is the choice of using either sdram (regular) or ddr ram (the new stuff)....so if you don't have the $ to get ddr ram yet u can still use the old sdram...this board has multiplier and fsb config in the bios.

3. the new ram is DDR (double data rate) ram and comes in PC1600 and PC2100 (and i think PC2400, but i'm not sure)

4. the sky's the limit :)

ahhh ok thanks guys. I have a few moe questions.

5:Can someone point me to some benchmarks comparing DDR and SDRAM memory?

6: With that ASUS mobo, can you use both sdram and ddr at the same time? Couse I have 128mb of sdram, I want 256. So I was thinking of adding 128 of ddr. My guess is it wil work but it will dumb down the ddr to the same level as the sdram making that purchase pointless.

7: I'm thinking of getting a RAID mobo, I know what RAID 0, RAID 1, and 0 +1 do. But I would also like to see some benchmarks comparing RAID 0 to regualr EIDE.
