View Full Version : Retrieving cache
How do I retrieve data from cache?
what cache? CPU cache? Temperory internet files cache? hard disk cache? Windows drivers cache?
please clarify.
I’m looking for a guide or for someone to show me hint, hint;) perhaps a walk-through?
Seriously though, I would like to know how to retrieve data from all, CPU, temperory internet files cache hard disk cache windows drivers cache. Any help would be appreciated.
uh... the internet cache and driver cache are just folders in windows, if you need to know where they are I could list them.
but I'm still not sure what you need the data from the various caches for....
is it purely out of interest for what sits in the cache at that moment in time, or is it for a practical use, like say save pictures and stuff from the internet which have been disabled from saving on the website (to name one example of using the internet cache)?

Yes and yes, please.
for XP:
internet cache:
drive letter\documents and settings\user name\local settings\temporary internet files
windows driver cache:
drive letter\windows\system32\drivers
as for the data that's in the CPU cache and hard disk cache... I have no idea how you can see them...
sorry about that. hopefully someone else can help you with the hard disk cache and CPU cache.

You cannot read the CPU and HDD caches. They are merely there as a buffer for the CPU/HDD transferring data.
In Windows, right-click on your Internet Explorer icon on your desktop (I assume you use that horrid browser:)), select Properties>Tools>Settings>View Files. That's your IE cache.
Don't fiddle with your driver cache, or you may end up trashing system drivers, and things won't work anymore.
Very helpful, thanks all:D
Oh, what about memory cache?
Sorry I'm on xp home and xp pro also windows 2000 pro
I don't think memories have caches, as the entire memory is kind of one big cache for all the stuff your computer is running.

the closest thing to a memory "cache" is a memory dump file that is created if your comp crashes. the location can be found by rightclicking my computer>properties>advanced>performance (I think) or one of those in there. I think its located with the pagefile/virtualmem options
I think the default location for memory dump is under the windows folder, so either WINNT or WINDOWS.
can't remember its name anymore, but if you find a file of the same size as your RAM, that should be it. might be something.dmp
