Hi, I’m in the process of designing my 2004 games rig, but as I have been away working for a year or so I have found myself a little behind in the hardware side of things. I have had a quick look around the usual hardware review sites and have come up with this system

3200 XP or FX?
1024 mb ddr ( not sure what to go for yet)
1 x SCSI Maxtor Atlas 15K , 36.7 GB (8C036J0) Hard Drive or 2 x Hitachi DeskStar 7K250 10K ATA 150 in RAID 0
No idea what motherboard to use
Leaning towards Nvidia 5950 ultra but again, not sure

Basically I’m looking to build a fast gaming rig, so HDD space isn’t very crucial but speed is. Like I say, I’m still not sure what mem/hdd/mobo combos will work best together, I’m told I should use win 2k to make use of the faster hdd’s I’m planning to use. Any info, guidance or recommendations would be greatly appreciated so I can start building the ultimate games monster.
Thanx Chris. :D

Video: ATI Radeon 9800Pro XL (free HL2, sweet)

Hard Drive: 2 Wester Digital 72GB Raptors in Raid (release date is soon)

CPU/Memory/Mobo:
Overclocker =>
-1800+ AMD XP TBRED-B *DLT3C* or 2500+ AMD "BARTON"
-OCZ PC3500-EL 2x512MB *PLATINUM*
-ABiT NF7-S v2.0 Nforce2

Otherwise go for the 64FX (you can easily reach 3200 preformance levels with the above specs).

I just read a review on a new type of flash HDD, It seems very fast when compared to the “usual” storage devices on the market, does anyone have any more information on these? I was also looking at the abit nf7-s board, but hear the n-force 3 is on its way, is it worth waiting? I really want the fastest games system available.
Thanks again, Chris

If you play the waiting game (e.g. I will wait till the next awesome XXXX comes out, then I will buy my thing) you will end up with:

A) Lots of money
B) No Hardware (in your case a computer)

The nForce3's are for A64 setups, if thats the route you want to go then wait for those or use the Via chipset. nVidia is also rumoured to be launching a dual Opteron gaming/workstation motherboard, which you may wish to look into.
