Well i popped my AMD T-bird 1.33ghz 266mhz fsb cpu into my FIC AZ11EA and fired my comp up...well it did all the installing and crap and i still had the old stuff on my hdd. so, i tried to log onto the net...lockup during dialing! wtf? hmm..must be cause its first boot to windows since installation..lets try again..i run a 3dmark2k1 test JUST to see what its performing at and it scores lower than my p3 550mhz =( whoops..only 1 stick of ram in doh! hehe(any attempts later lock up) every time i try to run a program(besides Counter-Strike) it locks up. i figured it was heat because as far as i know this hsf can only handle 700mhz, so i ordered a new fan..should be here in 2 days. does this sound like a heat problem? i have 3 case fans as well.

oh yeah, this screems of a heat problem!

This is my Setup!
A7V133
392RAM
Enermax 300W PSU(no more)
Leadtek Gforce2 pro ddr
46 gig IBM 7200 RPM
Toshiba 16x Dvd
(2) Teac 16x10x40
4 extra fans plus the psu fan
Volcano II

Bought my new cpu 1333, came home to install it and when I booted up the system it would lock up right at the desktop at default speed. Play with the bios for quite sometime and nothing, same thing. So, I decided to run the chip at 1300 and the chip would run fine, first I thought it was the board but I see in the forum that other people are not having many issues with A7V133. Just about two days ago I read in the forum about this guy trying to o/c his 1333 over1500mz and some gentlement mention to him that one option would be to change his power supply.

Let me tell you, I went back to my garage and pull out my old SPI 300 psu and system is running very stable at 1533mz.

So, there you have it. But this is my own experience.

It could be PSU, but it sounds like heat.

I have a similar problem and the next step for me is to get a different PSU.

Full tower Case (6 Cd-Rom bays)
7 fans (HSF, PSU, fan near HSF, fan near PSU, fan on video card, fan in bottom of case, fan in top CD-ROM Bay) and it still overheats!

So I ordered about $70 worth of fans: 2 Sunon 80mm w/50 CFM, a blorb, a gladiator HSF w/38cfm delta fan...hope this works (and I might need to get a diff PSU anyways for all the extra fans=p )

My powersupply is 300 watts...and also, i managed to run DX8 on one boot, and the damned thing was only running at 1000mhz, and in 3DMark2k1 it read the same...is this a motherboard setting? And for the moment i have around 6 fans in the case, 1 pulling in air in the bottom, 2 pushing it out the top, 1 on the chipset, 1 on the cpu, and 1 on the PSU. though the PSU wasnt the best brand, and i skimped on it..i hope that wasnt a fatal mistake =P

FORMAT!!! You said that you still had the old stuff on the hdd, I would bet there is a driver fight somewhere. Compounded by a heat problem. I would format, reinstall windows.

Already tried that =( and locked up during installation of drivers heh

Fiz
07-05-01, 09:07 PM
It installed windows ok though? Just locked up when you were installing the drivers? I don't think it would be a temp prob if you could go through a half hour of heavy cpu usage installing windows and not crash. I think it is a hardware conflict somewhere. What drivers were you loading when it crashed?

hmm..i dont remember what it was installing. but why wont it run at full mhz? is that because of the heat? i beleive it was hitting 125F idle with the sensor under the CPU.

Fiz

I was unaware that it won't run full MHZ, if that's the case then it is a heat issue. If you can't get the full 1.33 out of it you just need a bigger hsf. I would go with a Globalwin or something heavy duty like that. Sorry bout that, thought you were running at full speed. :) Try openeing up the case and shooting a house fan in it and see if that helps until you can get the better hsf.

yeah...i dont have any house fans handy..my friend with a 1.2ghz does that. i ordered a CoolerMaster EP5-6I51 rated at 1.4ghz for Athlons. Its also AMD certified so im hoping it will solve the heat problem. when i decide to overclock i may devise a water cooling system.

you're not alone, i have a 1.4 ghz and it's hotter than a mofo...right now asus probe (10 C too high) says it's 57 C with 7 fans inside (full tower) case and a desktop fan blowing directly on the mobo and cpu

/me is eagerly awaiting his gladiator hsf with a 38 cfm delta on it from crazypc :)

Very interesting ive been battling a similar problem, ie 1.333ghz t'bird locking up , i started a forum on here called system freezes had loads of replies.
Basically i went down the heat route got case fans, and thermalite heatsink still had prob , got the memory replaced by supplier and still had the problem.
Reinstalled win, got the latest drivers, flashed the bios etc even tryed new hd and graphics card still not solved it the only thing i havent done is change the psu.
To get an idea of your temps and voltages run motherboard monitor 5 from www.downloads.com

WOW man , my situation exactly! i also changed the mobo[kt7a raid] ram 3 times,HDD,case, added case fans[my idle temps are only 20 deg C. put a hercules card, swapped the slots around[and avoided slot 5! ,only thing left is the PSU,even flashed my damn BIOS to zt! mines the 1.2,it locks up everyday maybe 5 times and i can only get out of ot by ctrl alt delete till it restarts! al thats left is the cpu and PSU , i hope we can figure this bitch out dudes!

maybe i should give the CPU more volts?

ok...i did some tinkering. i tried "underclocking" the processor to 550mhz hehehe. i put my intel hsf fan on it and booted up...and it still locked =( the temperature was better, but the lockup was the same. Then i tried leaving the hsf in my freezer for about 5 minutes, then i stuck it on and started up..really nice temp, but after a bit it got warm and locked up. why is it still doing it at only 550mhz??

Are you sure hat you didn't crack the core when installing the cpu, I have read that even a little chip on the corner of the core can cause all sorts of problems.

im positive there isnt any damage...i just inspected it and it looks spick and span...new hsf still not here yet..and also, it may just be my PSU..in order for it to work, the ATX power cable has to be slanted a bit..i have to move it around until i hear that everything is running. i think theres something up with the plug...

ur mobo is the problem. my abit kt7 had exactly the same problem. and i also heard of lots of others who have it too with the abit kt7/a boards. The problem is that the mobo gives it too little juice when its idling, Thats why u also got really low idle temps. So when u then load it will lock very OFTEN. Can u hear the fans speed up when u load the cpu?? if so its ur mobo. All mine problems where solved when i bought an asus a7v133a board.

i dont hear any change in the rpms of the fans...also im going to clean off some of the heat paste on my cpu. when i first mounted it there was Shack paste all over the bottom of my hsf and its spread out over the proc..could this be doing it? im going to clean it with some sort of small brush...

FishDog3
07-08-01, 03:50 PM
definetly, the paste could be shorting out the bridges, cleen it up and apply a small ammount to the core only, and when i say small i mean small, you should be able to drag the small dab over the core with a business card or razor and have a very thin layer left, so thin that almost none presses out when you put the hsf on.

I sorted out my frequent lockups by soing two things......

1. Upped to I/O voltage to 3.6
2. Moved all my cards around and put my sb!Live card in slot 5.
(If it goes in any other slot the frequent crashes return - which is wierd cos' it's the opposite of what your supposed to do!)

how do i increase I/O voltage?

DoDFAMW4

ill be using onboard sound for this computer...i dont care what it sounds like as long as i can hear it. the only slots ill be using are for modulator demodulator and my vid card...

OK...well ive decided i think i know what the prob is. im guessing my RAM is not compatable with my Mobo/Processor. I am purchasing a 512mb stick of 133 that is made for T-Birds on KT133..hope this works...

Before I got my 120mm fan, I opened the side of the case and put a window fan next to it. Worked great, sounded like an airplane. But hey, I have big tower speakers connected to my computer, and when those things are going you can't hear anything else anyway.

DoDFAMW4
07-12-01, 12:06 AM
yes..im going to set a box fan as big as my mid tower case to be absolutley sure that it isnt heat causing the problem. as far as i can tell..its either RAM or my PSU..and im guessing its my RAM.

DONT give it more volt until u have gotten a fan thats cool it enough or u will it will end getting even worse or u actually might kill ur cpu. But u could try to decrease the voltage

Because u shouldnt use a INTEL fan on ur cpu. Its not made for amd dont use it before u get a better fan like globalwin fop32 atleast

YES try the ram first, did you do it yet?
i had the smae probs for 2 months now and i fixed it 3 days ago ,i have been using 1 256 micron dimm and another 128 of mushkin rev 1.5[actually i have 2 spares ] and believe it or not it was the mushkin that was giving me my lockups! id like to segest you try a friends ram but make sure its not a ****ty brand, even though im using generic myself .im so happy straight upto 1470 with low temps and NO PROBLEMS !!!!!!!!!!!! yippeeeeeeeeee
goodluck ,let us know please,it may be one issue we have with our mobos

OK...under load i was still under 40C at 1000mhz(standard multiplyer witht he fsb on 100) and a little more at 1.33. but it STILL LOCKS. i tested each strip of RAM i have...both locked eventually. im still thinking its the ram thats doing it tho..

ok ,were the 2 dimms of the same brand? If so ,try something other than what your using(id lend you some but im in australia,ITS A LONG SWIM!).
believe me man i did everything to mine and no change untill i got rid of my ram,so try a few to make sure so you can rule it out completely.and just to add about what i think tomas said about the fans speeding up under load, mine does it but no probs with it! maybe the Abits are like that?dunno .............................let us know

yes they are different brands...i dont have any friends with pc133 tho, its either pc100 or pc800 =( i ordered a stick of 512 that is compatable with my cpu and chipset..should be here in a few days...

Its not you'r ram don't waste your time. My dad spent over hmm lets see about $3000 on my 1 comp alone AMD just building it and replacing parts to see if it would work and it still locks up.If you have an ethernet card I would get a new one because I have a Link sys ethernet card and ONLY ONLINE my computer freezes in games.Offline my computer never freezes so check you'r ethernet card , see if your comp craskes offline if it don't its most likely ur ethernet card or modem.Im replacing my ethernet card today I tried the one the cable co. gave me and it broke in 2 dayz lol so now I got no choice but to get one,btw the cable co. ethernet card they gave me worked fine online it didn't freeze in Rainbow six : Rogue Spear.=]

well, i dont use ethernet, im on dialup. and it locks without being online. it DOES lock during dialup though.i can launch some programs but it will eventually lock.
