View Full Version : Need help! Poor performance with 9600 Pro

I'm only getting like 9,500 points in 3DMark 2k1 with my 9600 Pro.

It's running in a P4 2.4C @ 3.18GHz (265 FSB, 5:4)

I previously had an old NVidia TNT M64 card in there (The system is used for a seti cruncher)

My problem is, I forgot to uninstall the nvidia drivers before I installed the 9600 Pro. Would that cause the poor performance? And if so, how do I remove the NVidia drivers? I was thinking that the Det Destroyer would do it, but I don't think I was using detonator drivers on that old Nvidia card since Windows XP automatically recognized the card and installed drivers for it.

Please help.

it does not seem that bad, if your 9600 is not overclocked.

I did a search for 9600 with P4 at around 3200, and I got a bunch of scores between 10k and 11k, so 9500 is normal for non overclocking/tweaking.

edit:

after looking at a few reviews, it does seem a bit low... most reviews are getting around 11.5k...

you should be getting around 12k. umm...

I guess it's kinda strange that my Radeon 8500 get's a similar score on a 2.1 ghz AMD system @ 226 FSB.

I'm wondering where the 2500 points dissapeared to...

background programs?

can you see any specific problems while the tests run, or is it just slow overall?

which drivers are you using?

nice avatar, although I do prefer the 993 to the 996.

I agree, the 993 looks cooler ;)

As for backround programs, I shut everything down. I'm using the latest drivers from ati's website. When the tests are running, everything seems fine, just that the FPS is pretty low.

I tried with DX8.1 and DX 9.0b - similar results.

hmm... I'm stumped.

what about other drivers, all the intel chipset drivers and stuff?

The 9600pro realy isnt much faster in DX7 than the 8500. Its in the shaders and AA, as well as AF that it rules.

the thing is, AudiMan's combination of P4 3.2Ghz and 9600 Pro at stock should give him around 12k 3DMarks, as I've seen reviews with 2700+ and 2.8 getting around 11.5k in 3DMark2001 with the 9600 Pro card.

The only other thing I can think of is: could it be that the card is clocked lower than what a 9600 Pro is supposed to run at?

I figured it out. I uninstalled all the video drivers again, rebooted and installed the standard XP VGA driver. Then I installed the latest Catalyst drivers, clocked the card to 500/620 and scored just over 13,000 points.

Nice! So it was just some driver issues?

13k was higher than I expected.

you have a problem, the 9600 pro should be getting 12K at least in 3dmark 01 at stock. 9600 pro is much faster then any radeon 8500 easy dont believe that bs. Im thinking, reformat, or use a registry cleaning program. Something is hindering performance. i dont think a P4 3.18ghz is slower then an athlon xp 2600+ which is what i have and i get above 13K. maybe your overheating, which is causing your cpu to throttle way down. Maybe you have a program sucking up your cpu time. Look for stuff like this. if oyur folding, make sure it is set to lowest priority, any more and it will slow you down.

Edit: nevermind, seems like you solved the problem. Good for you.
