i'm getting a 1.45v mobile athlon xp cpu to build a system around. what do you guys suggest i do in terms of a motherboard, will the normal 1.65v fry my chip or should i not worry about it? what mobo should i get to be able to lower my vcore to 1.45v?
while 1.65v won't fry your CPU, I think that newest motherboards are capable of supplying 1.45v and lower to your CPU.
that's how people are undervolting their CPUs to something like 1.1v, underclocking, then cooling passively.
so I think the Abit NF7-S, which is the board most would suggest at the moment, should be fine for your use.
I think most motherboards will support the lower voltage, as they just get the info on voltage from one set of bridges on the CPU.
edit:
I should have made it clear, what I wanted to say as well was that the motherboard will detect that it's supposed to supply 1.45v tot he CPU, and it will supply the 1.45v.

Epox 8RDA+ also supports lower voltage. I have one so I know it does. Just for informational purposes....

I'll definitely be following your progress on running the mobile xp. I've been thinking about trying a couple in a dual rig I'm planning to upgrade soon. Let us know how it turns out. Since they clock so well with such low voltage, they might make some great overcloking procs. Plus, newegg just dropped the price on the mobile xp2400 from $102 early this morning to $85 this evening.:D The mobile 2400 is a Barton core too.
Yes, do keep us posted on your overclocking of this thing, if you do that.

These are fascinating to me also. Low voltage 2ghz bartons with a 133FSB. Sounds like a good CPU for a duallie to me- cooler, extra cache, not bad on price, and a high default multiplyer. The guys on 2cpu.com say they should work in SMP with an L5 mod.
