AMD will roll out it's Palomino series at 1533MHz (266) and 1500 (200) early september. But, I heard they may even bring it out sooner due to the threats of a possible 2GHz Pentium4 by late August. So maybe, we'll see the Palomino hit the store shelves by late August now:)

Important info!!

For all upgraders, in my opinion, make the most of your motherboard, if you got the 200MHz bus motherboard and cannot handle the 266MHz bus, wait for AMD to release the final processor based on 200MHz bus which is the 1.7GHz Palomino (17x100). That way, you get the benefits of the 17X multiplier and the chance to even overclock just a tad further (17x112=1904) :) As I recall, most KT133 chips can reach 112MHz?? Anyway, wait for 1.7GHz if your planning to upgrade your 200bus socket A processor.

For the rest of us 266MHz bus owners, AMD doesnt plan to stop till we see 2GHz+ up to a possible (17x133=2266MHz) since the Athlon is capable of up to 17x, maybe there will be 2266MHz for 266bus after all. Guess we will have to wait and see. Wouldnt that be nice though! Just remember that the Palomino will die far before 2.26GHz, Thoroughbred should pick up at 1.93GHz and also introduce the 333MHz bus new from AMD. So final thoughts, if 2.26GHz does come out with Thoroughbred, and I know most KT133a chipsets and AMD760 chipsets handle 150MHz (17x150=2.55GHz)

Think its not possible to get 2.55GHz from Athlon?? Think again, the Thoroughbred is .13micron which means up to 33% less heat and smaller too!

Finally, too many people are ASKING ABOUT "PALOMINO", get this strait everyone, the Palomino will run on all Athlon based motherboards that have 2nd generation chipset and a simple bios update. Infact, the bios update wont be necessary but for the computer to detect the processor as Palomino, a bios update will be needed.

As for thoroughbred, youll need twin power capabilities on your motherboard for the minimum requirements, such as found on all of Abit's KT133a boards.
This is needed for the lower voltages, 1.25v core voltage.

Wont the motherboard manufacters release updated bois so the 200 Mhz fsb mobo's can handle higher speed proccessors. I sure hope they do at least. I want to hit 2 Ghz on this mobo.

Hey the Vcore on my A7V will go all the way down to 1.1. That gives me a lot of overhead for overclocking. I won't even have to worry about the Voltage hack anymore.

As far as I know, 17X is the highest possible multiplier (with 5 bridges anyway) but yea, its possible if they added more bridges. 17x100 for now
still goodness thou.

My personal interest is whether existing motherboards will be able to interpret the internal thermal diode or not. My guess is it will take a few surface jumpers to an unused A/D input and custom bios hack, or it won't be able to be done at all.

Great post Atomic, but it sounds like were going to need a small generator to run these chips.

Obviously you haven't seen AMD's *NEW* roadmap they just released either. With AMD not expecting Palamino's to reach more then 1.6 ghz this year. Not the projected 1.7ghz.

This is a bad sign for AMD. They've had an excellent run going, eating up Intels market share. But lets face the fact. Intel hasent made any mistakes. They have just been steady as a rock. Making one chip after another. If may not be as fast, so to speak, but both these brands serve they're purpose, and do it very well. AMD has always had a way of turning somthing good, into somthing bad. Lets hope this is not the start of that, once again.

Yeah nice post atomic. I always like info on future since it saves me money knowing if its worth waiting for something.

Im glad that AMD might be lowing their release date for the Palaminos because the Thunderbird series have been out for way too long.

AMD were serious competition not a year back but now Intel are getting their acts together. AMD are going to want to work a little harder to keep their market share.

Yeah, I know, 1.67GHz and 1.6GHz will be it for 2001 for AMD. The Palomino will be here with 1.5GHz, 1.53GHz, 1.6GHz and 1.67GHz. Sadly, AMD plans to make one last leap of faith with the Thunderbird core topping it off at a mind blowing 1.53GHz! Wow!, 700MHz~1533MHz. Now thats a stretch in MHz eh.
