View Full Version : All this talk of new "faster" chips.....
What are we really gonna do with 2Ghz chips? My Duron 650 was fast stock, not to mention now at 1000Mhz. I mostly do Word, e-mail, and Surf the net. This system flies (opens word before I even really let go of the second click of the mouse). Occasionally I do some video editing and compression. It's fast at this as well.
Just as a test I clocked my 650 back down to 650 just to see the difference. It was very slight with most apps.
It's cool to run a fast chip for the bragging rights. I'm guilty of this myself. I just had to hit 1Gig with my Duron. I'm just curious, with current systems pretty much waiting on the software to catch up, what is the point of going to a 2Ghz CPU?

Its like buying a Vette. You will probably never even come close to the full potential of the car but you say "Hey, I drive a Vette" and people will listen.
Play the latest 3d games with the highest FPS you can get . A 650 duron or even 1000 duron isnt that great for the latest games

Isn't even FPS a subjective quality factor? I mean, how fast can the human eye/brain track frames? I would imagine anything above 40-50FPS is just "Proud Flesh". ;D

For me FPS is #1 and quality is #2. If you have more FPS your system is less likely to bog down in a huge battle and get choppy. Quality #2 because if you can't play the game smoothly it's not worth playing. It seems as if people always wonder what you would do with the latest greatest cpu but when it actually becomes available people are ready for it. You ask what I would do with a 10ghz cpu? I don't know but by the time I have one I'll probably have a use for it. At the rate MS is going you will need a 10ghz processor just for word[img="http://forums.overclockers.ws/forums/Public/Images/Default/E9.gif"]

The detail levels in 3D games keep going up which drives the fps down. We will need faster and faster cpu's and gpu's until "Holodeck" detail rendering becomes a reality.
Look at movie special effects. Remember the movie, "The Last Starfighter", all computer generated space scenes. At that time we were all playing on Atari800's and Commador64's, thinking how cool it would be to have a computer to render game graphics like the movie scenes. Jump to present...We have games that surpass that detail level.
Oops got to go to work...
You boys are forgetting that for gaming, it's the video card not the CPU that rules. For maximum frame rates, get yourself a GeForce3 and keep your 1 GHz CPU.
Get a Geforce3 AND a T-Bird AND THEN o/c the snot outa both of them. Now just wait for Max Payne and Unreal2. :)
I don't play games. There is a notable increase in speed from a 1 gig system to a 1.5 gig system in plain old boring daily use. I noticed this when I went from a Bird to an overclocked Duron for my dual pelt experiments. I was very happy to get a peppy Bird back in the system. If you have a fast Bird underclok it for a while and you will see what I mean. When the cost for this extra speed is only an extra $100, I’ll stand in line and wait for a new CPU!

What i think is, if i had a 800mhz cpu, with 800mhz fsb, i would be the happiest person on earth! a 500mhz cpu, with 500mhz fsb, would destroy a 1.5 tbird (in benchmarks like 3dmark2001). I think that we are all stuck in this phase of "more mhz, more mhz", but if we step away from the situation, and say what is the bottleneck? We realize that it is bandwidth. Just like video cards are having today with there memory.
You might say "well intel is attacking the situation by there quad pumped system bus" but, is the p4 really that great? No in fact it sux. I think that is i was a company like AMD/INTEL, i would create a low-cost processor, and motherboard that had at least 1/2 speed front side bus. Kind of just like how intel had there cache. It would then use RDRAM, so it can take real advantage of the bandwidth, and be super fast. Now i think that nVidia's idea about the nForce is a good one, but i think that the integrated graphics is a horrible idea, as it will use onboard ram. This would completely destroy performance on the system while playing games. This would make no difference to a regular motherboard, becuase what you gain with the new chipset, will be taken away with the onboard video.
If the onboard video was not there, then the performance would be much greater.
and increase of 1mhz fsb, gets me 10 points in 3dmark2001 on a VooDoo3, so imagine what 700mhz bus would get you? It would just be incredible. Then of course, video card creators, would have a problem.......keeping up with cpu's.
I think that in reality this can be possible, but not for quite some years.
I don't want a 2ghz cpu, i want a 800mhz cpu with a 800mhz fsb.

To me, there's no need for the fastest chip, but I'm going to get one anyway maybe an 8ghz when the 9ghz's are released :) because I can and it'll be of use someday...
I'm almost always a step or two behind the technology... it's easier on my wallet that way. :)

for grafix and rc5.
I agree, I think it's kinda like when a person makes thier car so it can go 230 miles an hour, they are never actually going to drive that fast, but it's nice to say they can. I Run my proc at 1200 from 1000, the only place I see a difference is in benchmark #'s, Quake 3 and UT look the same regardless. It's all about saying "Mines faster!"
