I built my first system 2 months ago, went with an Asus A7V133-RAID and Duron 900. So far I haven't overclocked, but i'm toying with that Idea. My question is about my CPU temperature. Right now, Asus Probe says the temp is 55 deg C/131 deg F. From reading some other posts, this seems awfully high, especially considering I'm running at the default speed. I am running a standard CoolerMaster HSF with the standard thermal compound, not high quality cooling components.
Does this sound like a good candidate for overclocking? Would my temps drop significantly with better thermal compound and HSF? Any input would be appreciated, as I am a newbie.
Those temps are way to high for overclocking, you shouldn't even be running that hot @ defualt speed. You should definetly invest in some Arctic Silver II thermal Grease and a better HSF (Heatsink and Fan). You can find these at www.2cooltek.com
forgot to mention this- In the meanwhile, you should try resitting your heatsink on your processor, and re-applying the thermal grease (you should have a very thin spread). Before re-applying the thermal grease, clean both the bottom of your heatsink and the die of your duron 900 with rubbing alchol.
Do you have any sort of case cooling?

Well, I'm getting a little confused...I just installed SiSoft Sandra. Under Asus PC Probe, it reports my CPU temp as 55C/131F and mobo temp as 35C/95F. Under Sandra, i open "Mainboard Information" and it reports the CPU temp as 44C/111.2F and mobo temp as 35C/95F. Why the difference in CPU temp, and which should I trust?
To follow up on some of the other posts, i just have standard case cooling right now. Intake fan in front, power supply fan exhaust. Temps stay the same whether the case is open or closed. I definately plan on buying some Arctic Silver and a better HSF, though.
Well dont trust the Asus Probe, its crap. My brothers computer says he running at 55 on idle even though he does not have his Duron 750 overclocked with an Alpha Pal 6035 HSF with Delta Black Label fan. Im sure it is seated correctly on the cpu too. The asus probe is useless, dont use, and dont trust it.

Yes the asus probe is not accurate, I know cause mine isnt, but it acts as a good reference to go by. By the way do you any other fans in the case? Getting cooler air in and out of the case is a big help and will lower your ambient temp and cpu temp.

CDAddict, what code is yout T-Bird, and how do you like the Glaciator? Mine just arrived but was damaged during the shipping process so I should get a new one within the next few days.
