Just out of nowhere my computer started acting very strange, and I think it's either sound or video related. My computer used to boot up, and go from the WinXP loading screen, then straight to the Welcome screen, then to the desktop.

Now however, it pauses and waits about 20 seconds at a black screen between the loading screen and the welcome screen, thats problem #1.

#2 Is right after windows boots up, and after everything is fine and dandy on my desktop, My computer has what appear to be lag spikes, but they are computer related, not on the net. Like, if I try to move my mouse in little circles it stops every 2-3 seconds for about 1/10th of a second. Also every time my mouse stops, my HDD light blinks. I would attribute this to my HD being bad, but it's brand new, and it just started doing this one time after I booted up.

#3 is Halo runs like crap all of a sudden. It used to work PERFECT. But now, the first intro movie lags very badly, like my computer can't handle the graphics in it or something. Then while I'm playing, every time i pass a checkpoint, or load up a new game, I get MAJOR computer lag. I have to just stop, and wait like 10 seconds, cuz it'll play fine for 2 secs, then pause for 2 secs, and this goes on for like a minute.

I have all of the latest drivers from Windows Update, all of the latest video and sound drivers, all the latest everything, and I've had this setup for about a week now, and just one time, I booted up and my computer began acting like this.

Can anyone possibly point me in a direction for this? Is is possibly a virus?

TIA for any help :(

Its probably not it, but you can try uninstalling windows update Q811493. My system ran slow when i had it.

My brother's Epox 8RDA+ does what you describe in #2 once every couple months, but clearing the CMOS always fixes it. Maybe try that...

Clearing CMOS will not mess anything else up? I can deal with possibly reinstalling windows, but I would really like to avoid a reformat.

Clearing the CMOS shouldn't affect anything except that the bios goes to defaults. That means that it may run slower until you restore some of the settings to optimal.
