I just went into newegg to check for availability of the AMD 1800+. Due to the recent release of the NIHUB, JIXIB, and JIXUB, the 1800s has become quite popular. If I remembered correctly, newegg used to sell this retail at $58. The price I saw just now was $64. That is quite a bump.

Do you guys think that it is more worth it to buy the 2500 with the higher L2 cache at $91 for $27 more than the 1800?

Newegg hasn't had 1800+ retails in stock for quite some time now and the OEM is still at 52 bucks which its been at for awhile as well....

There are a lot of treads in this forum talking about taking your chance of buying this chip with the latest stepping code NIHUB, JIXIB, and JIXUB. Of course, these recent ones can be overclocked very high. Some people even claim to go as high as 2.6Ghz, which will run as fast as the O/C Barton 2500 at 2.4Ghz. Buying an OEM chip might end you with an "A" core, or even a Palomino. Do you think its worth the risk?

Unless you are buying a guaranteed stepping, there is no greater chance of getting what you want when buying a retail over oem. Retail boxes could have been sitting around in a warehouse just as easily as oem containers.

Actually, the Duron is not a bad deal if you want something on the cheap. It's got great potential if you are an enthusiast who doesn't mind unlocking the cache and overclocking. There's a guy around here, can't remember the username, who has a Duron running at over 2.5ghz. That's really nice for a $35-40 CPU!

Yeah those new Durons are pretty damn good if you dont get an A core. I think you can unlock the disabled cache on them too.
